Gentlemen,

I have issues with my rear drum brakes on my '79 FJ55 - losing brake fluid from one of the cylinders. I've thought seriously about the rear disk brake conversion I've seen offered by JoeTLC (rotors from mid80s GMC truck and calibers from mid 80s Monte Carlo).

Now it seems I may need to make a decision on which route to take in repairing the rear brakes. Has anyone had any positive or negative experiences with this product/conversion?

I downloaded the instructions for the conversion and all seems straightforward. However, we all know that it's never as straightforward when we start turning wrenches.

Thanks in advance for your inputs - Jeff

joetlc is jt outfitters. i wouldn't buy anything from them ever, neither would a lot of other folks. some like them. poser sells rear disc setups also.

I agree with Ige...

You can rebuild/replace your rear brake cylinders/drums etc. However, it sounds like a great time to upgrade to discs!

I have been jerked around by Joe TLC/JT Outfitters in the past and will never give them another cent. Talk to Poser here on Mud, he'll get you sorted out with a rear disc brake setup.

Cheers, Carlos.

Here's what I did , if you notice they call out factory prt # on there kits mostly GM . I was able to buy the rotors and calipers from a brake supply cheap , bought the bracket from the eBay site a have the same set up for about $ 200 . FYi if your like me "short arms with deep pocket this is late model Monte Carlo stuff your local junk yard is full of it !!

I rebuilt my drum brakes for years, finally did the Poser rear discs a year or so ago...
Highly recommend Poser's set-up.

About 4-5 years ago I bought a joetlc set of brackets. They were not drilled correctly and had holes in the wrong spot. I called them about it and they basically told me I was full of crap, that there was no way they could be drilled incorrectly.

So after pulling out the drill press I was able to make them work.

My pig has discs all around, and it took a lot of tuning to get them to stop like it does today. I honestly think that the giant old rear drums worked better and provided a cleaner balance in panic situations. And oddly enough I had to put a residual valve in for the rears because the calipers were backing away from the rotor too much. Instead of ebay quality rotors you can buy good ones and have a machine shop turn them for you.

HI,
I did mine ones with toyota starlet caliper and solid rotor out a Isuzu tropperlike 4 years ago and still working great (photos before SOA)
