Rear bumper options for 2016+

@Markuson, Slee has a great platform. Maybe they'll be shipping by the time I'm ready for one.

I've seen Jason's version 1 rear on Tony's rig and the abuse it took, and based on that I have to imagine the v2 is unstoppable.

I hope to see someone with Ben's rear on the 200 at the LCDC this year so I can check that out. A lighter weight aluminum rear would be good for me as I don't regularly drag the bumper and could use the weight savings since I have a relatively heavy trailer (800# tongue weight). Also the larger hitch cutout and relocation of the trailer plug into the bumper are a big benefit to me.

@benc, hypothetically do you think it would be possible to integrate a bike carrier into the setup, or would bikes bouncing around be too much stress on the aluminum arms, bolt holes, etc?

I did a bit of reading about the ARB rear bumper, read comments from people that have them. I said no thanks to that thing.

I know I paid a lot for my Slee unit, but I’m happy with it. Good design and good build quality. They installed it perfectly. I have no complaints.

It’s expensive no doubt. But curious what you’re comparing to?

Bumpers are NOT created equally.
I’ve seen strong-looking rear bumpers from well-known, large companies (avoiding bashing here) bend BADLY at the wings...with far less strength/capacity in general. The most commonly installed alternative quite a ways north of half the cost of the Slee.

Slee also comes witg a built-in mod platform in the shape of a ladder...strong enough to attach just about anything...a super stout tire carrier with included hi-lift mount and inner Rotopax Mount...and overall strength to stop an 8klb rig with a tiny edge of one wing.

There are tons of cheaper alternatives to just about everything and there are definitely products I consider over-priced for what you get. But in all honesty, this is one case where I truly think you get what you pay for.

Here's a couple of pics of the mounting of the Slee 200 mount on my 2016. It's very stout. The first pic is of the passenger side wing attached to the frame.

This pick is the passenger side rear of the bumper attached to the frame:

By my count that's 17 attachment points on each side of the frame! And I think their install is very good.

Yes, these will have a 2" accessory receiver that will work well with a 1up bike rack. I do recommend a tension strap for heavy offroad use to the roof rack. The swing arms and swing arm mounts are still steel along with the recovery points and some of the internal bracing. This bumper is extremely solid and will take a good hit.

Here are some pics of some of the steel reinforcements that make an aluminum swing out bumper possible.

These 3/16" steel plates hold the captive nuts for the swing out hinge brackets, the bolts to a 1/4" aluminum gusset that runs all the way forward to the end cap. The end cap the bolts to the steel frame mounts that bolt directly to the frame.
The wings themselves are a full wrap under design that bolts directly to the frame and the steel reinforcement brackets.

There are the steel recovery points that bolt around the crossmember and tie the 3 main pieces of the bumper together. These have changed a bit from this pic but should give an idea of the thought that has gone into building an extremely strong light weight bumper.

@benc that is metal artwork!! Beautiful!!

That’s an interesting aluminum/steel combo.
Don’t remember seeing one built like that.
Super curious to see one in person.

Any of you possible @benc buyers heading to LCDC in Ouray this year?

Always fun & helpful to see new offerings in the morning lineup and especially cool to actually see them bouncing down trails.
Moab is particularly interesting on the trickier obstacles.

I’ve mostly come away reminded over and over that there are many MANY legit paths to skilled, capable and confident wheeling. My way is just one of tons of alternatives (including even the most minimal builds with Tupperware bumpers!!) that can kick booty on sketchy trails.

@benc I was wondering how that will work on the Aluminum Bumper! Will the 100 Series version have the same "reinforcing" for the swingarms?

I’ll be coming to one of you guys for a rear bumper hopefully before lcdc.

@Union I think you will not be disappointed with either builder. Both are some stand up gents and will work with them again! I've patiently waited for my products and can't wait for my build to be next in line! Good Luck!

Mike from Dobinsons says their bumper fits up to 2015. ARB modular bumper #5615010 also claims fitment only up to 2015. Looks like some have notched the bumper to fit 2016+.

Does someone have pic of the ARB on the 2016+ with the bumper notched to fit with the 2016 corner light?

Thanks ... I wonder if that would work with the tire carrier?

I'm looking for both the bumper protection and the spare since I'm going to use the spare area for an aux fuel tank.

The only 2016+ with arb bumpers I have seen only fit up to 2015 and the 2016+ have replaced that corner area with reflectors.

It would be nice to keep the light.

These issues are why I started the thread. Looks like options are on the horizon, ala TT, Dissent,et al. I am getting the Slee and will update with results. I expect to retain all the safety features, sensors, camera view, etc. along with a high quality installation. The bumper itself is well designed and built. I will update soon.

I dunno man... Slee commands a high end price with huge demand...for a bumper that isn’t even mentioned on his site.

That’s the power of forums and internet word of mouth. Every mod I’ve done (besides my own little home-made ones) on both my long-driven 100 series and now my 200 were only because of forums like this one, and primarily this one.

Try finding the TJM T13 bumper on their US site. It isn’t mentioned at all there, even though you can search for bumpers with the correct make, model etc. Nothing.

-But it’s on my 200 anyway because of this forum.
How hard is it to install the tjm bumper?

There’s a detailed install thread on here for the TJM T13.... I’ll try to find the link.
All front numbers/winches are a pain.
