some more baby steps

Just got back from yosemite after having not made the climb:frown:. No worries tho I think that it will be there when I come back for it next year, and anyway, early in October I will be getting on the Captain, so there will be no shortage of adventure.

got parts sandblasted and now comes the tailgate. that should go pretty easy .

gonna get everything ready then I am going to get parts Linexed, really only to hide my dubious welds and bondo work. I am a little nervous on that torsion bar and the hanging of the tailgate. It seems almost impossible to hang that thing without scratching the new paint. I guess i'll see:D

tape and newspaper....cardboard. are you gunna wheel it? If so, then who cares about scratchen, git the tears over with now so noone sees it on the trail.:p

I forgot to say....good learning on that rock just the same, and good job on the fab. You going to do the Nose or a shorter route in the fall? and.....Are you gunna drive the PIG to basecamp?

i don't care about scratches. the more the better on the outside at least. this car was bought and made for Mex so the worse it looks I guess the better. This is the time in the 15 years that I have owned it that all the body mounts are solid! Wheeling- hell yeah.

going up a route called North American Wall. should be fun and all those other emotions. I would like to top out. :D I learned a long time ago that if you don't make it try try try again and it will eventually go!

Pig Headed? It's just a rock.....just gotta be half as stubborn as my daughter:doh:

Got this tailgate window rail from Pighead along time ago. Now I pulled out the rubber and it was kinda rusty, go figure, so I sandblasted and por15ed all the parts. You're the bomb Pighead. I won't forget those beers that I owe you. I imagine it will only be a matter of time before we meet.

anyone out there have one of those two sliders that hold the window track to the regulator. It slides into the slot that is pictured.

Man! That's really turning out good. I bet it feels good to get that done with. Your wires, hanging down there, would scare me. I don't like doing the electrial side of it. Good Luck

The rollcage starts at the b-pillar and extends back into the cargo area. Kinda bummer in that my head kept hitting the rolll bar, so it does not run up along the b-pillar, but is about 4" aft.

I am not a big fan of electrical either. Plus the PO had done some magic cutting and splicing, so who knows what really is happening down there.:frown:

Hanging the tailgate tonight as soon as it cools off. I am hoping that this will be a walk in the park. Managed to find some new bolts for the hinges and maybe I will score the little slides that hold the back window to the regulator. Hola 3 puppies!

By the way if anyone is interested in replacing their electrical junction in the tailgate SOR has them in stock. They are the same one as was in there originally.

snag

  :frown: :crybaby:
Ran into a snag.

After having the Linex sprayed I went to get the tailgate hung. Went together pretty smoothly until I went to shut it! With the thing adjusted as high as was possible it was about 2mm short. I could close it, but it would grab as the bottom rotated over the sill.

After much deliberation, and questions to the locals about, I pulled the taigate off, cut the bottom skin fold off and welded the skin to the inside wall. Now I have to try and make it look pretty again, paint, Linex and I will be back to where I was. Can't wait to see it done!

I am still a little worried on how I will attatch the torsion bar. They certainly didn't make it an easy affair.

If anybody has done this please share how you did it.

I found this order worked on the torsion bar..REALLY needs at least 2 people...I did with 3...2 on the tailgate, one on the bolts.

Starting with all hinges/brackets off....

1. Hinge pivot on passenger side loosely attached to the body
3. Drivers side hinge bolted to bottom of tailgate.
2. Bolt torsion bar and pivot to passenger side of tailgate
3. Torsion par end insterted into hole on drivers side
4. Use blankets, tape, padding, etc to protect paint, work passenger side pivot onto passenger side hinge. With the tailgate you can manuever the torsion bar around to get on the pivot.
5. When torsion bar is attached on the passenger side, put the drivers side pivots together, swing the tailgate into position and attach drivers side hinge to the body.
6. Tighten both body side hinges and adjust to fit correctly.

Be patient and have help, should be okay...

This sounds like, somebody should do a write-up with pictures. I'm nowhere near that step, but I could use a good step by step.

Just say'n

If one does not magically appear on this thread, I will try to catch the procedure when I put the Moviestar's back together.

I'll try to take some pics. My situation-

Torsion bar is already set in the car, with the cover plate already set. I had to get it ready so I could Linex that area.

Definitely need atleast two people. Three would even be better, at least one to get the coldies or maybe take pics. I know that I will need some of those for this final step- the crux.

It's like a good climb everytime that you think you have done the crux another shows up to get you scarrrrreeedddd.

I wll need to be able to compress the bar to reach the pivot aspect of the passenger side hinge. It would have been so much easier if the connecting bolt threaded throgh towards the outside. Then I would not have to troque the bar so far.

Have to finish the tailgate amendments befor I get back to that.

Finally got the tailgate back. It has been relinexed to catch the outside line. Looks killer. I hope that it goes back together easily. I am getting to be done with this project!

I'll take some pics when it gets together. I am probably jinxing myself by even talking about it before it's together.

The last crux will be the spring attachment. Wish me luck
