It is possible that this is just my impression.

Lately, all Jeeps seem to use 35 in. or 37 in. tires, straight off the dealer/factory. Perhaps even bigger than that. Given the way they are designed, such tire choice makes them a bit too wide for off road trails.

A Jeep thing I do not understand.

yes... and that size tire is too big for the dana 30

I guess those tires lead to ugly surprises (read: expensive axle damage) off road.

Absolutely. Most that go to 37" have to upgrade to Dana 60 axles.
