I have a 94 4x4 pickup 22re with 33/10.50-15 tires with stock gears and its killin my mpg with 31's I was gettin around 17-20 mpg now I'm gettin 11-15 mpg:crybaby::bang:.
At this time I do not use the highway much I can't use 5th unless I'm going like 80mph and if that's the case my mpg go way down cuz I need to use WOT or close to it.

So my question is with 33's and 5.29's be to much overgear?:meh:

I do plan to have bigger tires in the future just not sure how soon something in the range of 35''-37'' tires.

^^ yup

the debate between 4.88's and 5.29's with 33's come down to preference. I hear the 5.29's are "more fun" and give more performance. While the 4.88's will bring back a more stock feeling.

But since you plan to upgrade in the future to a 35"+ tire, then you dont really have a choice. I say atleast 5.29's.

Put smaller tires back on. This improves perform ace and mileage. Or run your 33's and put the gear swap $$ towards a Honda for fuel economy and power. 33's and 4 cylinder Toyota trucks don't mix if you got anywhere to be quickly or economically.

Which is why I have a Honda Civic.... It's payed for it's self in gas money savings already...

A Toyota with 33's or 35's is a street legal 4wheeler... W/o gears, forget about the econo-box and 300k trouble-free miles.

You can forget anything else that makes it the truck it is with them. W/o gears you're gonna be killing your chain and every other part can wear.

Gears are leverage. plain and simple.

They weren't designed to run 3:50 - 3:80 gears. The reason they won't pull (like we want in america. they will pull) isn't b/c of the engine or the wow-wee 4:10's it's got. The trannys are geared like a car... plain and simple.

X2, Honda Nx250 though...

I combined 3 vehicles I had one time and I got over 100mpg... (my Nx is 70 and my Hilux is @ 20)

Messing with a mudder that's got a Quigley and an 80, I told him yours combined don't get 30!

And I hate to be the one to tell you this, but there is NO WAY you're figuring with the speedo corrected.

You are literally losing right at a 10th of a gear PER INCH you go up. If ya didn't you wouldn't be complaining right now.

Toyota's had factory 4:10 with a 28" tire. So with your 31's and 33's... do the math.

I'm too lazy to look right now but I used to have all the formulas for speedo and tire diameter and at 4th or 5th gear...blah.

Here.

If your truck came with 28" tires, then the 33's are 16% taller, which means you are going 16% farther than your odometer is saying, and you are getting 16% better gas mileage than you think, but that's stull not great...

I say, go with 5.29's if you have any inclination to go to 35's later on. I'm currently running 4.88's with 31's and it's not that back, much better than 4.10 and 31's. Around town it's great, I don't have to down shift for hills anymore. On the Socal freeways, it's not as nice but bearable. I don't have a tach, so I'm not sure of my rpm's but 65mph feels comfortable and I can live with that.

I run the same tire size (33x10.50x15) with 4.88 gears. My speedo is dead-on perfect, according to a GPS. And I can get 20-22 mpg if I keep it below 70 mph.

I used to think that maybe 5.29's would be good, until I installed the R151F tranny. Now things are perfect.

Merry Christmas from Downey...

I still say all those charts/diagrams/tables/on-line calculators are worthless. Chart A (that's a Table, not a Chart BTW) is based on the tires being manufactured to that precise diameter, which they never are. Then the tire gradually wears. And when the weight of the truck squishes the tire down a little bit, the radius is a little less, depending on the air pressure in the tire.

As an example: BF Goodrich says the 33x10.50R15 tire should be 32.7" diameter when new. I just went out and measured my tires with about 25K miles on them, they measure only about 31.5" diameter. And when I measure from the ground up to the approx center of the axle, I get only 15-3/8".

You're close to being completely right, but worthless?

Do you wanna start a chart with every tire diameter known to man? You're talking about being fractions off.

It's a great place to start, and to make a point. Scientific? Maybe not... But still closer to anything else that can't be proved.

I remember in some Petersen's I have, a company that sells tires actually put their real diameters next to them. It was pretty bad a** to see, but I haven't seen it lately and I'd have to go back through a couple hundred issues to find it...

Anyway... What's all this got to do with explaining to a person WHY his mpg and speedo is off, and WHY he has no power?

Simply matching the closest % of table B to table A WILL give you the closest to stock feel. And you can see where and how much over gear or under gear your choice will give you.

Funny how 4:88's seem to indicate the closest for 33's And 5:29's the closest for 35's (IF YOU WANT TO RUN RADIALS)... Seems I've heard this before.

Dang, I forgot some key things...

For Toyota IFS, you never want to run a 5:71 gear... I'm telling you this for a few reasons. As you go down in gear, numerically higher, your pinion size gets smaller. So the pinion from a 5:29 will be smaller than say a 4:88 or 4:11.

Also, the IFS front is NOT a 8" ring gear like the rear, nor is it as strong. It's a stub axle that uses the 7.5" ring that the 4cyl 2WD has. (Turbo or V6's 2WD's are the exception, they have an 8" rear.) You've also got 4 joints up front that can break. That's twice the number a Solid Front Axle has. And your steering linkage has more moving parts and is not as simple or strong.

So, proceed at your own risk. ;)

Sorry I forgot a key point to, I did a SAS and love it btw

Thats what i like to hear thanks
So if i go with the 5.29's it may be a lil much but I can get the mpg back and get around town a bit easier and not worry about it when I get the bigger tire's

Nice Thanks
I also have the chance to get a 3rd member with a lockright and 5.29's already set for $400
I think my mind is made

Thanks, so 33's and 5.29's would work, Sweet
I'd rather have the lowend kick the gears would give it anyway

ohhh, well... Then V6 chunk (NOW you can use 5:71's!) that bad boy and get on with it! :flipoff2:

DANG that thing looks clean! Hi steer and u-bolt flip...
