What transmission was typically installed in the PZJ77? 12HT?
Typically they were R151F which is what the 1HZ used between 98- till now in selected countries.
Some PZJ7* had a 4 sp R141
The diffs are 8 inch hilux diffs
The 12HT is an engine

HAHAHAH boy I feel like shmo. I'm at the learning stages for finding out about engines, so I won't put my name on anything tranny related. Except I do know that the H55T is a sought after upgrade for 60's.
I've also read the R151F has some issues? What could you mate to the PZ if a changout is needed?

Leave it as it is unless there are issues. Some owners never have issues and lot of them that do, are in arduous conditions attached to the 6cyl 1HZ.
The R151F is suppose to be a nicer shift and use less fuel ,seems roughly about 2-3% on the 6cyl from talking to other owners.
Its also used in some Prado and Hilux ,so parts down your way shouldnt be too hard to find
Toyota did an upgrade to the box about 200?. If you do need a rebuild in the future ,maybe you could adopt the upgraded box
since i own both and drive both almost daily i can say the R151 is no where as nice as the H55F to shift or drive, first gear in the R151 is too high 4.313 where as the H55F is 4.843
O/D for the R151 is .838 and the H55F is .845

but the R151 has stood up to the abuse that a PZT/IC/PI with 4.56s can dish out so in reality, if it is working then leave it alone BUT if given the choice then go with the H55F...

Is the H55F directly mateable to the PZ? I've read all over that the H55F is sought after, but all of its applications have been in 60 series. I've also read that many people have not liked the R151 very much (this one does have an R151, I got a pic of the service plate) falting it as a weak tranny. Otherwise I've seen it as very widespread and is shared between many vehicles like the Hilux/Surf/70 series. From that point of view, parts availability could be very good for expedition conditions no?
no, the H55F was never offered behind the PZ tranny and the imput shaft length is also unique in the cruiser world...
i do think the H55F would be a nice unit behind one...
i havea brand new R141 sitting here in a box... remember the old H41 coveted tranny? this has the exact same gearing but in a R series tranny. for a bush or city only vehicle this would be a perfect tranny for highway it has no O/D so the engine will waste more fuel...

What size of tyres could I put on a 76/77 wagon? Is stock around 31-32"? Is a spring over axle conversion common or does this invite disaster stress-wise? What type of OME options are there for the 76/77? I would imagine its similar to any 75/78 troopie or truck no? Any popular mods for this style wagon?

you can run a 34" skinnie on a stock 77.
you can run a 36" skinnie with 3" lift or a 35" fat
i do not know of any lift kits for a 77, weird rear leafs but i know you can get something out of Japan for them.
anything you can do to a 70 you can do to the 77.
SOA, in my opinion, is only for dedicated rock crawling or mudding. i do not recommend SOA for a DD or a long distance traveler.

Goal for the truck is to make it a dedicated expedition vehicle for extreme jungle/water crossings. Not too much in the way of rock crawling other than maybe getting passed landslides or the like. I was mostly trying to discerne if SOA was popular or not for expedition class vehicles and it seems it would cause more headaches than its worth. I only ask since I put on OME heavy springs on my FJC to improve the suspension and put on 33" KM2s and I was looking to do something similar with the 77. Are Dakar OME springs popular upgrades to the stock leafs? I am looking to run 255/85/16 KM2s. I imagine that being so skinny they wouldn't contact much of the components in the wheel well. At most I would like a 2" lift or so. I don't want the COG to get too high and invite other disasters with a heavily loaded rig. I already know I want an aux tank to keep fuel as low as possible. Also considering an 80L water tank in the rear seat area for the same COG reason above. RTT is preferable due to the terrain and being lightweight doesn't worry me too much about roofrack capacity. Either way I want to also put some sort of external rolecage, similar to Graham Jackson's D110 found on the expedition portal. Tieing the roofrack straight into the external cage would also boost capacity considerably though I don't want more than 100kg on the rack at any time. Mostly for space and loading capacity. The vehicle needs to carry minimum of 2, maximum of 3 passengers + gear.
for your desires i would say SUA with over loads in the rear.. one guy posted that the air bags would chafe and not good for long distance applications but air might be nice for those times in the bush when you need that departure angle increased a whee bit...

if this works then you are my new hero. to get rid of the R151 is perfect, of course now i have a brand new R141 sitting here so this info will have to wait till my next beater...

My only concern here would be harmonics. The PZ flywheel is different the the HZ. I would imagine the PZ is designed to work with any issues 5 cyl firing instead of 6 cyl firing creates. But, nothing ventured nothing gained.

Someone posted recently that with a welded flywheel, the 1PZ engine makes a thumping noise at idle.
Please post some pics on this union. The reason I originally posted this question was because the PZ is quite scarce in Chile, where I'll be buying this vehicle, whereas there are numerous 60 series. Plus what I've heard about the H55 in general. To me it seems this would be a great answer to getting a more robust tranny.
With regards to the flywheel, the vehicle I'm looking at had its flywheel changed out by the owner to the flywheel of the HZ engine. He says it runs much smoother now because of it.
