here's another pic of the backend. I was advised how to take it but didn't see the example pic. It's dark now so I'll take another tomorrow. There is no cancer that I'm aware of back there.

looks like a solid rig!

Rattles huh..

I'll give ya $1,500 then..

Only from what the previous owners family said - I need to see if it's in the paperwork. I know they said they had a compression test or something done but I'm not sure if I have a copy of the results. At some point, the original owner (Grandfather) was researching selling it to CCOT but I think they don't want any older than 75 so I guess that's why he didn't do it. I have those research papers somewhere. Again, my understanding is that he used it as like a "rolling deer blind" and only used it on his ranch, and towed it to other hunting locations. The family had about 5 other 4 wheel drive vehicles and sold it because they weren't using it. So the story lines up with the mileage. I wasn't worried about the mileage when we bought it - the price was right. Brakes were shot on it and it barely would start without choking it out. The electrical was pretty hosed up and the thing was filled with mud-dauber nests. Cracked hoses - it sat in a barn for a long time. They had no reason to lie about the mileage.

The mileage gauge doesn't look tampered with at all and all of the digits look like they are aligned right. I'm no expert, obviously. I know a few people that I've had out to buy FJ parts flipped out over it and had no doubt that it was showing the original mileage.

Much respect for being conscientious enough to ask for opinions. You already know you have a nice cruiser. The question is what to do with it?

The presence of leaves in the bed, the wet floor mat and your noted infrequent use tell the tale.

Simply put, if you cannot keep it dry and find a way to drive and enjoy the truck then sell it to someone who can.

The real possibility that the mileage is actual only reinforces why it deserves the utmost care and preservation---not a restoration.

how many fj parts have you sold? This is starting to sound strange.

Truck looks great... I'd want to see it in person, before trying to price it.

Great old Victorian house... Reminds me of one in Smithville.

If that's where you're at, I rented reasonable storage on Hwy 71, by the Mexican Resturant, just west of Smithville... I'd keep it in a storage room.

But, you may have other reasons to sell... Good luck either way.

Believe it or not, I removed a lot more than that. Fall hit here before I got a cover. And I did dry off the mat. The day before I took the photos we had an unexpected deluge and I figured I'd wait it out to allow it to dry before I put the cover back on.

You make a lot of sense. Thank you.

You figured me out. I've been tasked by Jeep to sow discord on the FJ40 forum...

When we first bought it, I bought a carb. It was the wrong one. I sold it to a 40 dude off of Craigslist. As I mentioned, I had an OCD soft top but he made it in an Army Green Color. Wrong color, he never made me a different one, so I sold it. I think there was another sale or two in there of another part that I bought off of eBay that was wrong. Not sure why this is strange...

Great town, huh? Did/do you live out here? The problem with storing it away from the house is that we'll never use it. I'm at the "is it worth keeping it?" point. We have money in it and if it's not worth more than we have in it, then it makes sense just to keep it. If it's worth more, does it make sense selling it?

Then there's the sentimental value. I wanted a 40 for years. When I had the ability to buy one, I scoured Craigslist and eBay several times a day for a year. Practically had to beg the guy to sell it to me over selling it to somebody out of state. Like many of you, I put literal blood and sweat into this thing. I never learned how to wrench growing up and I was learning on this. I love looking at it, I love owning it, but I'm not sure it makes sense to.

You know, maybe I'm using this forum as a cheap alternative to seeing a shrink...

Yep, it was a great place to live and has a lot of potential. We had a 1930 house on Hudgins and finally got tired of mowing a huge yard and upkeep on a 1930 house... Sold it and a house in Georgetown and moved to Vegas.

If you really want to keep it, you can find a way... But, you may have other priorities for the equity... So many regret selling.

Good luck!!

More pics of her butt.

Stayed up late last night thinking and brainstorming what I can do. My new best friend from California suggested that I get a soft-top from Trollhole to increase the value and protect her innards. I need to find the rest of my soft-top parts if I go in that direction and I saw somewhere on here that there are two types of soft-top bow - one is straight and one has curves. Hopefully I bought the right set.

In the meantime, if I go in this direction, I need to get some coverage for her. We have an old gazebo out there that is worthless. My thought is that I could replace it with a larger 12x12 gazebo that I could park her under. Bonus is that there is electricity to the old one so I could run it into the new gazebo/carport for the 40. The thought is that I could sell it and use the proceeds to help buy the bigger one. Bad news is that my wife freaking likes it. I would still need to show the plans to the city and hope that it doesn't put my coverage over the magical 30%.

If this happens, I'm looking at the "preservation" option on the 40. I've done a lot of searching on here for "surface rust removal" that leads to threads about peoples builds but I haven't found one answer. I watched some videos and read some blogs about it but they mostly seem to be about restoration. I'd like to get the rust off of it without destroying the paint. What truly works? And then what do you put on the bare metal to keep it from happening again without turning it black?

If we keep it, would it make sense to have it media blasted underneath and to have the paint removed from the wheels?

Arrgh. I don't know why I'm so stressed about this.

i'll stop by on the weekend of the 11th when I get back from Taiwan (if you still have it) and we can meet at the Roadhouse on 21 next to the state park. I'll buy the first few rounds. Cheers
