After searching for where my siblings have hidden my keys one time too many I have decided I want to set up a push button ignition in my 92 FJ-80. What I would really like to do is replace the keyhole with a starter button and put a toggle switch somewhere slightly discrete for kill, acc and on. The goal is simplicity in wiring and no need for a key of any sort to drive the car. I have searched the forums and google but haven't found what I am looking for yet. Does anyone have experience with this stuff or know of a good kit?

I understand that for most people this would be a major security risk. My landcruiser lives on an island where it really can't leave. The toggle switch should be enough to keep the neighbors from borrowing it.

My buddy had a setup in his Samurai where you pushed a button to crank the engine, but a key was still required for ACC, ON, etc.

I have only heard of the kill switch set up that still requires a key. It's definitely a good theft deterrent. I had a professor that grew up in Mexico that swore by this mod. He went to grad school at Scripps in San Diego and he never had a problem with his ranger being stolen. Several attempted thefts, but they could never find his kill switch.:flipoff2:

When I had a sand rail (VW powered dund buggy ;)) I was considering the same thing.

You can rig up a combination of switches in series for this by wiring them so that the correct combination of "on" and "off" are achieved to create the sarter circuit then you can hit the starter button. (saw this in a Hot VW magazine)

Or a combination touch pad like a Lincoln Continental would have on the doors might be used = know the combo, start the cruiser!

Good luck :D

I was thinking about this too, but basically gave up.

On my truck, I have a hidden kill switch that controls just the fuel pump. The truck may start with the key, but it won't run very long.

On my CRX, I did something different. I rigged up a momentary toggle switch that has to be turn on at the exact same time that the keyed ignition is turned on. That one has caused a few humerous moments at the tire stores, when I forget to mention it to the guys.

I was thinking with the Land Cruiser, you could maybe disconnect the starter signal wire and run a direct wire to the starter through a momentary switch and turn the ignition on, and then push the button to activate the starter.

Problem is, when I was looking at the wiring diagrams, it didn't look feasible. I'm trying to remember why, but I seem to recall that the ignition/start switch controlled more than just the starter and it was getting more complicated that I wanted.

I haven't bothered with a kill switch, since the factory alarm already has one built in.

When you leave the starter solenoid wire unplugged the A/T temp and low oil lights (I think it's those two) come on. Maybe that was why?

Definitely possible. Have a look at the schemos. It's a simple circuit.

My kill switch fires a one shot to enable the starter and it is powered by ignition hot (ON). I used an existing OEM switch that fires a relay...no, I won't tell you which one..., but any one will work.
