Hey all,

I have a PTO winch on my 45 and would like to remove it, as I do not wheel the old girl. I can see how the winch un-bolts, but I cannot tell the best way to detach and remove the shaft that drives the winch from the tcase. Any help is appreciated!

Cheers,

Joel

Once you pull the winch head off, you should be able to see how the shaft comes off.

The shaft bolts to the t-case gear box at the rear and a pillow block assembly at the front. The pillow block hangs from a bracket that's attached to the front cross member (or somewhere near there.) So, the shaft is fully supported w/out the winch.

I'm in need of a pillow-block assembly, if you wnat to get rid of it, let me know.

If I were you, I'd keep it on there. For nothing else, but the fact that 'we-all' covet the PTO winch...

Thanks for the reply, fellas. I have been toying with the idea of selling it... Even had it on mud classifieds about a month ago...

It's a ramsey, while cool just don't bring any $. well, not compared to a teq pto.

To remove it you need to unbolt it from the back of the case and get an output shaft cover to replace it and IIRC a spacer too.

The rest should be pretty self explanitory by looking at the shaft and pillow block and the unit bolted to the frame rails.

You wouldn't need to remove the PTO gear and put a spacer in unless you wanted to sell the gear.

Dave, this is a ramsey. It doesn't have anything to do with the pto gear or the internal spacer.

If he does remove the ramsey take off on the T-case it removes from the back out the output shaft. He will need the proper spacer and most likely a new washer/nut to stake so he can get the proper torque spec. Would need an output shaft seal and cover too. The ramsey unit replaces all these so unless he's the original owner or got them from him he'll need to source these items.

Joel, This sounds drastic but getting that shaft loose from the winch and gearbox is difficult so why not just cut the shaft in half just behind the winch? Then when the winch and gearbox are on the bench it will be easier to remove the remnants. Repair is fairly easy. If you decide to part out any of it, I need the cable from the dash to the gearbox that activates the PTO.

the shaft has keyways at the joints. you can try pounding out the joint to remove the keys. after 45 of neglect mine were rusted in too well.i ended up cuttiing the shaft at the front crossmember. steering shafts (if solid) make good replacements if'n you have to cut.

Thanks for all of the replies. I think I will just leave it in, as I am not in desperate need to remove it anyway. Good info in here if I do decide to remove someday. It does seem that where the winch meets the shaft, there is no easy way to separate them, other than cutting the shaft...

cheers!

Joel
