Pros and cons of 60s & 62s?

62s have the 4speed auto with OD (A440). 60s have the 4 speed manual withOUT OD (H42). Beno said the fancy 5 speed manual with OD (H55) will bolt right up to the fj62 3FE engine so I'm 100% sure it does, their just expensive ($2089). pretty sure they bolt right up to 60's 2F as well.

If you want to swap an H42 in to a 62, you'll need to get it out of a late model 60 (1986-87) because they have a spacer type thing on the back that makes them as long as the A440 automatic.

As much as it pains me to say it, 80s are probably the best truck if you have expo in mind... but their still ugly as s***! (anybody wanna help me swap woody's body onto Aidans 80 frame/drivetrain/suspension?)

Thx Patrick. 2k is alot of cash to drop but it would be sweet. I do like the looks of the 60 but I also like the 80's they look good. Well they can look good lol. I was thinking the 80 was the way to go as well. Guess I gotta finish my taco before I look at any LC's. and then we got the ole 85 to get going and build it up. Then I can build an expo rig. Prolly an 80 but we shall see.

Get that 40 that's lurking around down there!!! Amazing I resited the urge to CUSS:grinpimp:

Like a trailer park in here! Thanks guys.

Hendog I don't think a 40 is in my budget. Hell most 60s aren't but liked the one I saw and it has been a possibility.

Can we get this cleaned up so its useful tech for future cruiser heads. Things went way out of hand after my post but I was being somewhat serious about stopping all of it. So can a mod clean this up? Thanks

Watch what you wish for! There could be a few 30 day suspensions coming----LOL

I believe most of us have a 30 day vacation under our belts :). The red truck you are talking about is it a 60 or 62?

It's still useful tech info. The added lil play time keeps us A.D.D. Ppl reading lol. ;)
But really I don't have a delete post button so who has to do that ?

The A440F is longer than any version of the H42. The H42s in the 85+ FJ60s are the same length as the H55F, and a direct fit. Shift tower on the H55F is a little bit taller than that of the H42 so the installation requires just a bit more finesse. Installation of any manual into a FJ62 will require driveline, cross member modifications, along with adding the stuff needed for the clutch. And a little wiring job with the neutral start switch.

For myself the 60 series is what I've settled on for day to day use. I think the best 60 series, if you want to stay Toyota, would have to be built. Later FJ60 with 2FE and H55F. Go for the FJ62 front axle with the factory trussing and vented backing plates. Suspension of your choice, OME is good enough for my use, and tires and gearing. The H55F, 4.11s, and 33s work fine for general use.

Guess it makes you feel tough. Eh to each his own. Fuel injection is more reliable at angles and cold start up than carbs. Once again to each his own.

Molon Labe

No. It is a bad habit caused by the many miscreants that fill my days and nights.
It was once written that the word "fxxx" was a soldiers most used word other than the article "a".

BTW, I have always liked both the 60 and the 62.

Well I don't have a lot to add I own both types FJ60 & FJ62 and depending on what purpose the vehicle is going to serve. They are both great vehicles the FJ62 is a camping rig really doesn't see any trail time. The FJ60 is modestly built for camping fishing and trail riding but as already mentioned it's big and heavy for some of the rougher trails. If heavily modified it's more than capable on any trail. I've never been to terribly concerned about a little sheet metal damage. The musts for me and the mods made to my truck are are Bumpers, Sliders (Thx Nick), Full Float rear axle, 35" MTR Minimum, Regear diff's to 4.88's
FJ62 Front Axle with Chromoly Super Set Shafts and Birfs (Future Upgrade), H55F
5 Speed Manual Gearbox, CB, TBI (Future Upgrade) and odds and ends. To each is own, buy the truck you want drive it, take it camping, take it wheeling, decide which direction you want your build to go that best suits you needs. In a few years it may turn into a tubed wheeler or be pretty much with what you started with. Either way never try and convince yourself that your build is finished........cause it never is.

Well, right and wrong and corrected by Godwin below. H55f is still significantly shorter than the automatic, and the drive lines needed are not even close. But the drivelines from a late FJ60 will fit on anFJ62 converted to H55F.

Well, H55F's are "almost" a direct fit. You will still need a bunch of things like a clutch pedal, clutch master, lines, slave, fork, etc. Along with late 2F (marked 3F) bellhousing.

Also right and wrong. The bellhousing from an earlier FJ60 (or even FJ40) can be used. In fact it's preferable. The reason is the bellhousing marked "3F" tips the transmission 9 degrees to the right, which makes the transfercase hang down an additional 3 inches. The clutch fork you use and slave you use, has to match the bellhousing you use.

I'll also share that it is significantly easier to use a later FJ60 pedal bucket-then the holes embossed on the firewall of the FJ62 are actually where you drill.

Godwin here is right on the money, except, it would be easier to start with an FJ62, and forget the 2FE. It isn't needed, and the 3FE is a nice running motor. If you gotta have round headlights, that's a straight forward swap, but you have to include the radiator support, so not a simple swap, just an obvious one.

I agree with all of this. Especially if there was a clean smog legal TBI conversion for FJ60. I'd buy one now.

Regarding which is a better vehicle? I've driven both a long time, and fuel injection trumps any of the shortcomings the FJ62 might have, even the square headlights. It is a better running, smoother, easier starting, more powerful motor and a 60 feels crude by comparison. FJ60s are biiig wagons for hard trails, but it makes for a bit more challenge too.

But the real reason I'm trolling on the Georgia club board is to see if any of you know a sergeant at Fort Benning with a white 80 series that has an ARB on the front and a Slee bumper on the back?

Carry on, bad language is OK...:D

Thanks for the input guys! Yeah if I got one it would def end up on 37s and all that comes with it. I want something to take the family in and go camping but I also plan to go wheeling and won't be taking the bunny slopes. I know I damaged a good bit of sheet metal on the FJ cruiser but back then most of the group was on IFS and few were on solid axles and they were mild builds. I guess it comes down to deciding what to do and if the red cruiser is for sale when my taxes finally get deposited and got the money laying around. I know it's heavy. My fj cruiser was probably pushing 5500 or 6000 pounds. It did alright.

Can u finally step up from the bunny hill ? :flipoff2:

Does he have my phone number and does he get a day off?

I'd be very interested in meeting up with him.

:)
