Propane injection good idea or bad idea ?.

I found a website saying after fitting this you loose compression in your diesel engine, doesn't save you money and streches the limits of the engine to a point of getting damaged.Also said when the propane is injected the first time the revs rise around 300rpm and at that moment the compression drops.Others say they get improved fuel economy because the engine uses less diesel so go longer distances, a more reliable less noisy engine, improved torque and increased torque.Somebody is saying how bad this is and the other is saying the opposite, so don't which way to go about this.Any of you guys used this yet ? and has it given you trouble so far ?.

IMO ,anytime you raise the output of an engine ,you lose out on the long term life of the engine.
If its used sparingly the effects would be minimal,but many shops are selling kits where the propane is added to the engine all the time.

I don't know the specifics of how propane injection works, but it was fitted to a Diesel-Electric locomotive in NSW a couple of years ago....Actually a quick search reveals it's in use now...I can't say what effects it is having on the longevity of these loco engines, but from all reports the trials have been a success...

Even much more power that you get from a engine .. it wears a little more .. Actually I not take the comp measurements of my engine, but I'm 100% positive that it have less comp since I install my turbo in my 2H ..

I good friend here ( and also Mud member ) run a Propane kit in his 105 1HD-T ( swaped engine ) Cruiser ..

my opinion, if used in moderation it is great for power increase... abuse it and kiss your engine good-bye...

As with all things, moderation is the key.

Too many people swear by Propane to discount it, and too many people blow engines to totally disregard problems of improper use.

I have decided to go turbo and water injection, but Crushers seems to have good success with his kits.

My decision to go turbo is more based on local building laws forbidding the storage or use of Propane within indoor parking facilities. I actually was interested in propane, but cest la vie.

I was thinking that the propane system was for a turbo diesel, and at cretin boost increments there was different amounts of propane injected. IE. 3 psi + 1/4 cfm, 6 psi = 1/2 cfm and 9 psi = 3/4 cfm. I was also to the understanding that it lowered EGT's and increases performance, but as far as better fuel mileage goes i don't think so due to the fact that you still dump the same amount of fuel in the engine, it just burns better giving you more POWER.

I don't under stand how a turbo can lower your compression unless a guy baked his piston rings holding her at 20 psi boost and 1500 F EGT's for a full day trip up the mountain.
 
depending on the kit, the one i use is boost controled just like you described. to have it start at 3PSI would be a waste (in my mind) since you would have the propane on all the time and you would drink a 20lb in VERY short order (BTTT).
if you are maxed out at 8 psi then have the propane come on at 6 with max dump at 8. i set mine for start at 10 psi and a max at 14 with 3cfm setting at max.
compression numbers are mechanical, adding propane will not change compression ratio
 
I have a friend who has run a propane (or LPG as it is known here) injection kit on his Nissan Patrol for about two years now, it has given him a decent power increase and is cheaper to run. However, that said, the Nissan 6 is a dog of an engine and needs a power increase (Shocking MPG too) and in Aus diesel is taxed and propane isn't so that's were most of the running cost saving comes from.
 
My engine really hates lpg (propane/butane mix) fumigation. It starts detonating violently at a mix as lean as 0.4% of the air volume.
 
Your diesel detonates???
 
why would anyone inject propane into an idling diesel? what purpose is this expected to fill?
