Some good progress made today. Got the wiring pulled, labled the plugs, cleaned up the engine bay a little bit, and ECU setup :D

Pulled the glove box door

The ecu is under the dash tucked up nicely

DSC08059.jpg

Well all be damned the tundra ecu is the same size as the fj ecu

DSC08061.jpg

except the mount tabs wont bolt to the tundra ecu because the case isnt tapped  = :grinpimp:

Stay tuned...

With the ECU out of the way I needed to pull the AC portion of the heater box aka the ac evaporator. All kinds of semi hidden nuts that hold it on.

DSC08064.jpg

You have to pull the ac lines off the evaporator on the engine bay side

Looks like this when you get it out

This is what your after. Accessability to the harness and plugs

The TLC bible

The locations and connector identification numbers

The six connectors labled

The engine side of the harness that plugs into the body harness and ECU

The harness labled

This isnt super custom but im proud of my ECU mod

The FJ ecu and mounting tab layout

DSC08087.jpg

One set of holes on the back side of the ecu that transfer over from the FJ to the Tundra

DSC08089.jpg

Both ECU's dismantled with anti static ground strap of course

DSC08091.jpg

See where im going with this ?

DSC08093.jpg

I Drilled out on new holes on the case in the drill press. The mounting bosses were already cast into the case :)

Heres the tap I used to match the screws

Tapping

DSC08098.jpg

The holes tapped

DSC08101.jpg

The upper screws on the two new mounting bosses had to have the screws shortened due to some clearance with a heatsink on the PCB

The tundra ecu case had some corrosion on the aluminum case and some minor rust on the metal lid. I threw them in the sand blaster with glas bead. Then gave it a flat black skunkwerks black box paint job. Now I can say the black box controls my motor. I know cheesy

Then to round out the day I did some cleanup of the engine bay with windex and towels then got the hard stuff off with goof-off

How difficult would you say the wiring is so far? thats my biggest problem with these swaps is figuring out all the wiring.

This will be a fun build to watch....can i drive it when your done? :hmm:

I havent started the wiring yet but im going to make it 99.9% pnp by sacrificing the stock ECU to get the female connectors.

Im not the right guy to ask about the wiring dificulty since I've done a few similar swaps. I dont find it that hard. It's actually kinda fun. Time consuming, but fun. Especially when you hear it roar to life the first time.
Its just a matter of having a diagram from the donor and a diagram for the recipient, then trace the wires.

I'll be starting the wiring this week. I just went and finished stripping the tundra so I have the harness here.

Well I had some more time so I sloughtered the sacrificial FJ ECU

They put solder in the screw heads that holds the plastic plug to the PCB. I removed the solder and screws

DSC08136.jpg

I tried side snips
I tried dikes
I tried nips...
I ended up using a cut off wheel on a dremel and cutting thru the connector pins

The end result your after

You are a brave soul..... all that wiring makes me nervous from here.

Great build, looking forward to seeing it come together.

this is getting good...

I want an 80..bad.

How's the motor mounting to the 80?

Do you have to weld/make custom mounts?

Wow! This is GREAT! I'm currently rebuilding my 1FZ, because I didn't have the guts (a/k/a balls) to do this swap myself (or any other V8 swap, for that matter). If you'll keep great records (and, especially, if you're inclined to duplicate your efforts by making a fairly straightforward "kit" for this swap), I believe this would be a fairly good money-making venture. I know if there had been more information / more pnp parts / a total swap kit available, there's NO WAY I would have put the 4.5 back in......it would have been a V8 for sure!

Thanks for the progress reports / photos........this will be a great transformation to watch!

I second this, I would pay you for step by step directions and info, I want a v-8 BAD!!!!!!!!!!
