Progress or lack there of on my noise problem

Ours didn't pull either when it first started just a slight noise of splines bouncing against splines. Which I ignored *G* when it grabbed on my daughter in the middle of the freeway in Carlsbad at rush hour ... Well it became a more serious problem...... Best of luck looking forward to your resolution

Right after OME j springs + caster bushings + front ARB bar, guess what, I have the same ggrrrrrr noise at about 70 mph. Comes and goes. Seems to come from the front end. Sometimes stays when I slow down to about 65 mph. Nothing else changed, except the lift & associated angles. Gotta be some driveshaft issue...

The problem was masked by the slider hitting the pinch weld in the front. This caused a lot of the noise that we were hearing. I only bring that up so that others might check that as well. I believe that was making the grinding noise that was coming from the front pass side.

The grrrr grrrr when you back off the throttle was the driveshaft. The slider only added some vibration, but really not sound as much.

Something rattling in ARB front bumper pre-4 runner days? Loose piece of some other car that got hit :D

Installed the rear drive shaft and everything is running great. I do think the slider contributed to some of the grinding sound, because I had my daughter (otherdaughterofromer) ride with me and she pointed at the front right wheel well as the biggest sound. Thats were the slider was touching the pinch weld.

I know Christo disagrees, but you had to drive it a while to get the real bad metal grinding sound.

So problem solved and a big thanks to Robbie and Christo for the help.

It was interesting, when Christo pulled the drive shaft and showed me the U Joint after it was warm from driving, you could feel a problem in the joint. When I took it to the driveshaft shop yesterday, it wasn't as pronounced. They even said they wouldn't change it. I asked them to change them anyways. It was definitely worse right after Christo pulled it.

It also appears my squeaky bearing sound is gone. That was probably the U joint after it warmed up.

They did say my drive shaft also was off balance slightly, but not bad.

Problem solved, back to mods. Actually, I probably will put back on the 1 " spacers this weekend. I'll post the results in that thread to complete that story.

Good stuff ..

Also looking forward to hearing how you make out now with the 1" spacer.

grrrr

thanks guys I always thought thr grrr was from the front too, I am going out right now to pull my rear shaft to see if the noise stops, I hope this works...I have been listening to that noise for over two years now!

I hope my problems help you and others who read this. As a posted in the spacer thread. I re-installed the spacers and everything is fine.

Yhis close the book on my long search for the noise problem I was having. I love happy endings. I now am profiecient at removing drive shafts, swaybars, spacers (Springs) and have gone through the list of looking for noise tricks that I found in search. I tried to list all those here.

Now that I am done with this, back to thinking about my next mod. Or I could work on the 40 for a while.

There is not way that the slider and pinch weld contact can generate a GRRR sound. The body and slider can not move in relation to each other that fast. Trust me on this. :D I have heard enough rear driveshafts make that noise to me 99.9% sure, but always have to leave the .1% to CYA

I was saying the slider was making the grinding sound which was not rotational or even in nature. The grr was the driveshaft. I only say that because my daughter pointed to the wheel well, and the grinding sound did not sound rotational. It didn't happen all the time, only on highway speeds and I was testing it driving through Trex, so maybe bouncing at high speeds caused the metal to metal contact.

To install my sliders, I had to loosen the transmission cross member bolts then slid it over about 1/4", then I ground off that one corner of it so it didn't push the slider mount out any more. This is pretty common, and if you don't install that slider plate with the 4 small bolts flush to the frame, you'll shim the slider "up," forcing it closer to the pinch weld that it will rub against. I've only seen this issue on the cat side..

Romer, glad you're back in business, if I ever hear a rattle, vibration, or grrr sound I know who to call.
