I noticed in the closer picture of the crank end that between 6 and 7 oclock the crank has some ding marks from possibly a BFH. If this is so then the end play is probably out of wack with the crank, too far forward. You are doing great so far.

It's pretty obv. where the flywheel is rubbing in person, on the main bearing it just looks cleaner on the lower half than the rest so I'm assuming that's where it is rubbing.

you said you left the old pilot bearing in. perhaps its time to replace it.....do you know the history of the pilot bearing?
edit: and yeah, what was the flywheel trick?

transmission is out. flywheel trick was to add washers to keep it from rubbing the boss if that was the cause of the noise.

So you spaced out the flywheel, and it still makes the noise?

Then the noise has to be coming from the crank rubbing against the mains inside. (?)

Aren't you pissed at the vendor yet? Any word from them on the issue?

so this image labeled by coolerman is wrong then?

Well the transmission is out so I would say the pilot bearing wouldn't be causing the noise. Would I be wrong in that assumption?

Dad hasn't called yet, we made a vid and burned it on a cd, we're going to send it in the mail because our email is acting up and we've tried to send it two days now but it won't go through.

would it be crazy (im spitballing) to leave the flywheel off and "manually" crank the engine from the front crank nut with an impact gun to see if you can recreate the squeal? disconnect the coil wire of course, dont let the engine fire.

i would have called them DAYS ago. the cruiserparts operation is the biggest bunch of idiots ive ever dealt with. ive made 3 orders with them and all of them were wrong. they sent the wrong used parts. they were very good about making it right, but it was pulling teeth to get a copy of an invoice. i would call there tomorrow first thing and ask for Bruce. he seems to have the most brain cells left up there.

They come with a supposed 90 day warranty. Thing is on the contract or whatever you want to call it, it says the buyer is responsible for returning the item, and we definitely do not want to ship an engine on our own dime. But I'll try to push my dad some more about calling.

FWIW, isn't this usually how it goes when you think it is "probably something simple"? Welcome to being a Cruiserhead...just when you get ready to bang your head against a wall, other Cruiserheads show up to pad the wall. You have done a good job keeping your cool and not giving up. Impressive for someone your age. Welcome to the club.

Well that means a lot thanks, when we first bought the thing we bought it out of state so we didn't get a mechanic to look at it. We drove it around the parking lot only up to 2nd or so and bought it. Well then we find sand after a compression test and taking off a valve cover. then we knew we were in it.

Anyways y'all have helped a lot with various issues before I had an account and we usually found the problem right away.

give 'em a break---it's really cold up there--brain cells may only be firing on 4 cylinders-or maybe 3, or 2 or------
Seriously though, they seem to respond much better through the net. a phone call will go unreturned for a week or more(sounds like you may have the inside tel # though)
One thing they do have that is really good is they are one of the few(if not only) Cos. that will ship glass. (I know this doesn't help you, but just sayin.)

If the squeal went away when you sprayed oil behind the flywheel, the problem has to be right there. I am still not sure that the flywheel rubbing against the rubber main seal isn't the problem. Have you put a straight edge across the rear of the main to see what is sticking out the farthest? If the main seal was driven in from the rear without loosening the rear main, there is a very real possibility that the seal is warped or not driven far enough into the recess.

You could also clean the seal and rear of the flywheel and put some Prussian Blue on one or the other, start the engine, stop it and remove the flywheel and see exactly what is touching.

If the main seal was driven in from the rear without loosening the rear main,

Say it isn't so. As I recall, you pulled the oil pan and replaced that seal, so it would follow that you pulled the rear main cap to replace the main seal, right?

Did exactly that and torqued to spec. I've used a straight edge, and the seal is close but it does not touch.

Update: We believe the noise was from the aftermarket seal we bought. We think the crank was rubbing against the inside and causing the noise. We put on our old oem seal and the noise has disappeared. However, we are waiting for it to cool some to start it again to see if it comes back.
