I stumbled upon a 2013 LC, one owner, California registered and driven, dealer serviced (always on-time, no missed scheduled service intervals), no major repairs, no evidence it has been used for towing, photos look good inside and out. Just over 89k miles. Carmax price: $39,998. Carmax Warranty up to 150k miles an additional $1900 with $300 deductible. $2600 with $50 deductible. I have it reserved and have paid $99 to have it sent to my local store to be looked over by my mechanic and I before I jump into the 200 Series life... Thoughts on the price and warranty?

Carmax is typically ~ $2k above what I would consider to be market price and this seems in line with that assessment. Their strong suit is finding you the used car you're looking for without searching the world and making it easy to get it to your zip code. And many people would rather pay their fixed price than haggle.

If it hasn't had the radiator replaced and you're not a DIY guy then I'd buy the warranty. You're looking at a $1,100 guaranteed. So less your deductible it will pay $800. The starter will likely go before 150k and that should get you past the point where the warranty has started to save you money. Add anything else and you'll be dollars ahead. If it's had the radiator done or you're a DIY'er then I'm not sure there's solid money on the bet.

There is a 2011 that just went on sale at the Lexus dealer here in LV. They called me about it this morning.
1 owner with 85K on it for $30,500

Good service history on that one.

Always check the VIN on Welcome to Toyota Owners or Lexus Drivers

$2650 could pay Toyota for the radiator, water pump and starter you’ll need to replace soon anyway...so it’s kind of a wash initially...but I would make SURE those three items will all be covered.

If they are going to charge a $300 deductible for each of those though? Ouch. That’s another $900 for fully expected swap-outs, and would be cheaper to just do those standard replacements on your own. :meh:

Beyond those three givens... the worth of a warranty on other stuff for the next 60k miles is ??.
One thing I would definitely do is inspect under the front plastic cover for hair-line crack forming on the flat label piece on your radiator. If it’s starting g to become visible, you might be able to get them to replace it before sale...?

Anyone even considering the money for 13+, sit in one and sit in an 08-11 as well. The small differences in gauge cluster (multi color MFI) and nav make it feel much more modern. For me and my plans to keep this thing for a decade or more it was definitely worth the extra money.

Plus, vented seats, HID low beams, even more cartoonish looking...

Oh and what Markuson said about the radiator inspection. Knowing I could do it myself, I talked the dealer into paying for an OEM radiator when I pointed out the crack. Pulling up the dramatic pictures in the radiator public service announcement thread helped them make up their minds.

I have heard great things about the CarMax warranties. I was looking at Range Rovers a while back and read the horrible about how unreliable they were. Customer said he purchased a SC Ranger Rover Sport and paid about $6K for a 150K mi. 6 year warranty on top of what he thought was over priced. He bought it any way because it was the color he wanted and had a clean record etc. Within 2 years his warranty had paid for itself. It was one thing after another and all of the service was done at a local Rover dealer with CarMax picking up the tab.
Not sure how many years your warranty is or how many miles you will put on her a year but it sounds like the factoring $2,600 into the total price maybe the way to go. You plan on keeping this vehicle for the next 10 years...that what we all say! Haha If you do and they pay for some big ticket items up to 150K miles I think you will win out. You also have the peace of mind knowing your truck will hold it's value better than most cars on the road and there will always be a buyer if you decide to part ways. Make sure it is transferable warranty and that will make your truck more valuable if you decide to sell earlier.

Most of us bought in to how reliable these machines are so "who needs a warranty, right"? I am on my own but my 2014 just hit 26,000 miles so I have a ways to go. Fingers crossed and good luck.

Search for Doug Demuro's stories about his CarMax warranty on his Range Rover. Wow he really cashed in on that deal. Legendary stuff.

There is also a big difference between a warranty on a landrover and one on almost any toyota..

Just for the sake of comparison I paid roughly $1850 for a Toyota $0 platinum warranty that went from 36k to 125k. So while you of course can't get that at 89k miles, it should show just how that Carmax one is pretty high.
