Hey guys, got a 86 4runner with the 22re. My temp guage is not working so I threw in a aftermarket one to help observe my temps. my temp seems to range from 190 anywhere up to 230. not sure if the 230degrees is too high, and the haynes book hasen't been very helpfull here. Any help here would be appreciated! I have searched btw and have not found what i'm looking for.
I'm thinking about changing the t-stat, any idea which to run for Colorado? the cooler the better
Thank you in advance,Anthony

Howdy! I would expect a good cooling system to deliver temps of 190 to 210 under the hottest conditions, such as running the A/C in Phoenix on the freeway in July during rush hour. But that's just me. You need to do some work on that. I would start with getting the radiator flushed out. I upgraded my 85 to a high density core, and it never ran over 195. John

In what conditions does it get very high temps? Idling, in town driving, stop & go freeway, unimpeded freeway? Knowing that can help allot in targeting where to first look for what is really causing the high temperatures.

With the age of your vehicle I wouldn't be surprised if the silicon oil in the fan clutch is in need of replacement. I've had to do it on all three of my mini trucks which range from '89 to '95. https://forum.ih8mud.com/79-95-toyota-truck-tech/167678-fan-clutch-service.html#post2369392. BTW, if the fan clutch is at all oily or dirty, replace it's silicon oil as it is likely leaking.

My truck never goes over 195*F. A/C, desert, rock crawling, it doesn't matter.
