Hey guys. Update on Finn. We are still in the Pediatric ICU at Batson and hoping to soon move upstairs to the cancer floor. For those that don’t already know, Finn has a very aggressive form of cancer and has tumors in his brain and extensive tumors down his spine. He wasn’t sick and didn’t show any signs until a slight limp showed up about 3 weeks ago. He quickly got worse over the next week and after several days of doctors visits and exams, was admitted to Batson, where an MRI revealed the news. We found out last Saturday, June 2nd. He has completed his first round of emergency chemo to try and reduce the pressure on his spinal cord and get him out of critical danger. He handled chemo very well, but remains on a ventilator for now. As we get more detailed pathology back from St. Jude’s lab, we will proceed with either another round of chemo or radiation, depending on the results of the lab work. After the second round of treatment, another MRI will reveal the results and we will keep fighting from there.
Lindsay and I are living in the ICU with Finn for the time being. We have family that is caring for the rest of the kids and they are coming up every day to visit. All we are asking for right now is prayers. Thank you to all of you that have reached out so far, all of you that have been praying, bringing food to our house, asking how to help, donating money for Finn, all of it. We are humbled and overwhelmed by your love for Finn and our family.
The team at Blair Batson is outstanding and he has been receiving top-notch care since he’s been here. His case is quite unusual and doctors from around the country are reviewing his case. We have nothing but great things to say about everyone here.
We aren’t in a place for visitors and some of our friends have already implemented a meal schedule for our house, so we don’t have any immediate needs other than all of your prayers. We love all of you.
“Coming off ventilator tomorrow which has been our small goal this week. Booster of chemo tomorrow as well. Then radiation starts Monday (tentatively) which is scary as hell. He's had a good couple of days, but it's slow going. Tiny victories. Went home for a couple hours this evening to hang with kids and get a real shower. It was a good morale boost for them and me.”
“Radiation starts Monday. Yesterday was chemo booster. He did fine with that, and ventilator tube came out yesterday. He's been totally off sedation now and is pretty cranky and has been up over 24 hrs, so they gave him something to try and get him to sleep. Was pretty agitated and doesn't remember much of the past week and a half.”
Keep your prayers going for Finn. He’s making progress.
“Off IV, eating and drinking on his own, regaining some movement in toes (which is a huge relief). Smiling and talking a lot more. 4 days into radiation. Sat and Sunday off, then start back Monday. Just trying to keep forward momentum going.”
Thanks for all of your thoughts and prayers. And thanks Nolen for keeping cottonland updated. If you’re not on FB, here’s the latest update I posted today:
Finn update: Thank you all for the continued prayers and support. He's made some very good strides this week. We moved out of ICU up to the cancer floor at Batson. Finn is eating and drinking on his own, talking and overall doing very well. We completed our first week of radiation and will continue Monday-Friday for several more weeks. He's regained some movement in his toes and feet which is exceptionally good long-term news for his spinal cord. Your prayers are working--please keep them up. We are all very happy with his small victories, but realize he still has a very large mountain to climb and we are just at the beginning. Thanks again to all of you that have prayed for him, brought food and presents to our house, donated your blood, time and money, covered work assignments, organized prayer services, fundraisers...It is truly overwhelming and humbling. I don't know how we can ever repay your kindness and generosity. Please keep Finn and our family in your prayers. Love to you all.
Continued prayers and well wishes for the whole family from here. Your family was included in a pass along prayer at the family reunion last week. Lots of deep appalachia rooting for Finn from Madison County.
