Prado door on Gx rear door ?

This may be moot point if the object of your build is to replicate a Prado, but which is cheaper/cost effective, a Prado rear door with tire carrier or a U.S. aftermarket bumper with a tire carrier? Especially if your goal is for off road use.
High tailing it on washboard roads at 35+ mph with a 33"+ tire bouncing around back there is looking like a failure waiting to happen.
Who knows, I could be wrong?? :meh:

Agreed. I would be chasing form and function. Form in the sense that it's rounding out the Prado conversion, function as I need a 5th wheel mount.

The MetalTech rear bumper with swing out is $2820 shipped. But that's an entire rear bumper. Depending on your goals (and budget) this may or may not be ideal.

The JW rear mount (which also requires the license plate mount) is $900 shipped. This solution requires drilling through the factory hatch and tosses up a disclaimer that it's "not for Baja Racing" on checkout. I'm not Baja racing, but I'm not exactly sure what the CYA statement is eluding to. Perhaps washboard roads at 35MPH qualifies?

Either way, I think the OEM solution is probably the best solution. If indeed we can get it down to $1000-$1200, it's basically in line with the JW and I have seen a number of Aussies, Emirates and Japanese guys rocking the OEM 5th wheel with 33-35in tires in all sorts of conditions. Not sure what long term effects are (sag?), but it seems in this case, the OEM solution is the best solution.

Check out this Aussie:

That Dust Storm is quite a rig! Not sure if I'd want my dual ARB compressor and aux fuel tank (if that's what that is) inside the cabin.

I'm gonna put mine on the roof . Not gonna spend a boat load of money mounting some weird looking contraption on the rear to mount a tire
How's that ?

Still may get on the phone( again) to Belize , see what I can find as far as prado door on a gx

I tried to buy one from an Australian wrecking yard a year ago. They laughed when I asked if I could get it shipped. I don’t think it will work in Belize / costa - do they even get the prado with aux tanks in these markets? If they don’t actually get that option then the doors won’t be there. I went to Nicaragua recently - saw tons of Prados but none with rear door tire.

I’m still interested in getting one.

I forgot why it's important to move it

A little extra clearance maybe ?
Hate to interrupt your conversation... 😜

But my Prado Rear Door is supposed to be delivered in early May - I was aiming for mid-April - but that got pushed back due to sea freight shipping delays.

I’m hoping I’ll be able to get the car into the body shop and installed fairly quickly.

I’ll be sure to report back on install / fitment.

From there, I’ll be more than happy to help anyone get one. Maybe even some sort of group buy?

Just hope it wasn't being shipped on the Ever Given going through the Suez Canal!

Luckily - no!

But I believe it was stuck in the scrum. I had some stuff push through being delivered this week. But of course, my toys are delayed. 🤦‍♂️

....soon ;) you want any pics of the hinges or anything specific, just let me know. the best part about it is the extra fuel tank where the GX keeps the wheel.

One of my previous rigs was an Isuzu Trooper, I had a 35" on the door for many years without a problem. That is a shorter door though, less leverage on the hinges.

I got a question! What is the largest tire you can fit with the cover (and rear camera) on?

How large of tire fits inside that rear tire covering?

I don’t know the answer to ‘with the cover on’ - but there are guys running 33s and 35s while maintaining the rear camera. I believe the 35s ran a spacer, while the 33s were bolt on. I think there’s a video and article linked further up the thread.

I suppose if you NEEDED a cover - you could always splurge on a leather Yosemite Sam ‘Back Off’ cover. 😆

Awesome! I might need to take you up on that. I’m hoping it’s straight forward as it’s sold as a conversion from the flat back. But you never know.

Sadly, won’t get the benefit of the extra tank capacity. Unless I decide to get certifiably crazy and order a new tank from overseas. 😜

If you got 3k to spare, you can get an LRA Tank as well
