very tired power steering in 86 4runner that has spent the last 10 years or so as a trail only rig. The pump is leaking from every seal and fitting, and so is the gearbox. When its cold, I start up the rig and have to saw the steering wheel back and for for a while before there is any assist. Time for something new.

I bought a remanned pump from AutoZoo or Retard Auto or one of those chains and it lasted right at 1 mile. No noise, no leak, but no assist either. Took it back and reinstalled the old leaker that still worked.

Question: What pump/box replacement do yall recommend? Take my chances with a junkyard setup? Or is there someone out there that sells good remans? Toyota parts are out of the question, they want more for the box and pump than the whole rig is worth.

I have a PS setup from an '87 turbo truck in a box, ready to ship. I believe it works fine. Includes pump w/pulley, reservoir, little cooler thingy that goes in front of the radiator, and the 3 hoses. Make me an offer.

Otherwise, I would just rebuild your old pump. You can get all the parts you need from Toyota, and it's not hard to do, especially if you have the FSM.

Just to tag along....

Just how difficult/expensive would it be to rebuild a PS pump, for, say, an '85 4-runner? I've got an FSM for the 40 series, and I'm guessing the pump is virtually the same inside, just with a remote reservoir on the 22R-E. Correct?

Very good link to see. Definitely clears up some questions I have about rebuilding the PS box.

But the PS pump: anything on that? There's not a single thing in the FAQ about steering at all, or am I missing something? (I'd put my money on this option)

It's not that hard, but I honestly don't know how similar it is to the FJ40 pump. The FSM has a good procedure on how to do it, search for the FSM, links to PDF's are out there. There is a seal kit available from Toyota, but it doesn't include the bearing, make sure you get that too.

Although not exactly cheap PSC Motorsports builds Toyota Steering boxes and pumps specifically for rockcrawlers and you can get it pre-tapped for Hydro assist if you want to add it on in the future.
