Power steering to manual

Hello everyone, I'm sure many of you will be surprised to hear of a power to manual swap. I have a 1981 bj42 with power steering that is leaking bad. I am renting the house I'm in. And the driveway... landlord shat himself because my truck leaked and left staining. I need to solve this problem by Monday or there will be serious problems with my living situation. Budget is extremely tight and timeframe is tighter. Someone local has a good manual box for cheap that I can pick up immediately. Question is, can I just plop this manual box in, or do any mods need to be done? Before someone recommends a seal kit, this is my daily driver, takes 2+ weeks for fastest kit to get here, and the kit costs like 10x what this manual will cost. Any help is sooo appreciated this is seriously end game for the cruiser. I dont want to have to get rid of it just because of some leaks. But I'm not getting evicted over it.

Park down the street where the leak doesn't matter and walk back and forth. Buy some concrete or asphalt cleaner, fix the mess.
Look at the manual box next to PS unit as if it looks like it will fit. Look in the manuals. Read some of the treads of converting to PS, see what was swapped/replaced.

Look at the manual box next to PS unit as if it looks like it will fit. Look in the manuals. Read some of the treads of converting to PS, see what was swapped/replaced.

Bylaw gives me nice tickets for overnight parking lol but during the day I do. I haven't bought the manual one yet, will go tomorrow afternoon. Soonest he could meet me with it. Yes that's a good idea. Maybe reverse engineer a ps conversion thread. Thanks for the advice

I've had an oil change matt under it, but that is "unsightly and a tripping hazard" i really just want to slap a box in this thing and get it done with.

It sounds like you bought the wrong vehicle for the for the location you live. FJ40' are known for leaking something. If it's not one thing, It'll be another. Park in the grass.

I'm not sure but the experts will chime in.
I believe the steering shaft is different between the two boxes. Not sure if just a box swap would work.

I know. I bought it while living at home with my parents, but now I'm in a tight spot in life. Lost my job, and now money is very tight and everything is breaking down lol. It waited for just the right time to start acting up. Land cruiser life.

Awesome info thank you! That helps a lot. So if I grab the manual box from this guy and he has the shaft to go with it I may be out of the woods

The shaft from the steering wheel to the rag joint, yes.

But hang on to the power steering stuff because there will come a time when you'll want to swap back. When things improve (and they will: planning and foresight will always be your friend), you'll get that box rebuilt and re-install it.

dumb thought but could you drain the fluid out then remove the belt? Then it will act like a manual box setup?
