lndcruz,

The upper and lower knuckle (trunion) bearings are what the steering tires swivel on. If they were damaged in the accident, or worn from years of lack of maintenance (most are never serviced, btw) then there's lots of slack in the swivel mechanism = vague steering. Tires also make a huge difference in steering, and have you had the truck aligned to try to fix this??

DougM

Nope I haven't gotten it aligned. I guess all this is adding up to a full front end rebuild+rotors+calipers+pads+shocks and springs. Ugh this isn't going to be cheap:crybaby:

PITMAN ARM removal:mad: My OTC adjustable pitman arm puller just spreads apart when I really torque on it.

Use a hammer in conjunction with your puller:

1. Put the otc puller on the pitman arm.
2. snug tight
3. whack pitman arm with BFH

Works every time

Don't try to pull the arm with the OTC puller alone.

Advance auto has a "5 piece front end puller kit" that works perfectly pulling your tres.

Use the same method as above:

1. Place puller on TRE
2. snug tight
3 whack tre with bfh

Good Luck!

One more question. How would one test the trunion bearings?

Other than removing the knuckles for a visual inspection jack up the front end and grab the top and bottom of the tire and rock top-to-bottom repeatedly. If you feel movement (slop) the trunnion bearings are shot.

Could a twisted septor shaft cause death wobble. I still get death wobble from 30-40... or is it 40-50 (haven't driven the cruiser in a while due to axle upgrades) and the only thing right now that helps to stop it is to set the toe out.... which causes my tires to wear badly and the steering to be incorrect. I've rebuilt the front axles, made sure all the bolts are tight to factory spec, balanced tires with beads, replaced the panhard with an adjustable and new bushings, tightened the nut on the top of the box.
The only thing that I haven't done is replace the control arm bushings (which I have two of, need to get the other 4, OEM ofcourse) and then this.

I'm selling some parts for some cash and might be wanting to do this anyway to try and get some feeling back into my steering.

Beno are all the parts for this $500 for everything??

Yes, roughly $550 (MUD prices) for the upgraded sector shaft, corresponding pitman arm, and the gear box rebuild kit.

Thanks... I may look into doing this... I guess pulling my pitman off and looking at the splines is my first thing to do.

I am about to do mine - when you have replaced pretty much everything else the steering box likely needs work and the 105 sector shaft is going to be a great upgrade.

FWIW, a twisted sector shaft would not cause death-wobble. It will cause misalignment of the steering wheel and the tires, but it doesn't add any uncontrollable play to the steering system.

For more detail on what inside the box and how it fits together, some weirdo had way too much time on his hands here: https://forum.ih8mud.com/80-series-tech/443494-steering-gear-box-rebuild.html :D

If the shaft is slightly twisted and teh box worn out couldn't it cause some wobble???

I just checked my frame while I was trying to look at the shaft and noticed I have the same two cracks that are in this post.

I suppose that could have something to do with it.

So to get a rebuilt box you are looking at $550 just in parts! Then this texas company rebuilds it for $150? But I also have to take it off and ship it to them so there is more money there as well... So what is the total cost of a rebuild? Can the Texas guys get the parts direct from Cdan to save me from shipping them twice?

This rebuild includes upgrading the sector shaft and the pitman arm. You do not have to do this part if you just want to rebuild the gear box.

West Texas did mine as well and yes, the cost was $150. The West Texas folks have their own parts that they can use as well--you don't have to use OEM parts.

You don't have to go to the hospital when you are having a heart attack either. :grinpimp:

You guys really should try stand up...

;)

Hey I'm a realist.

Not everyone wants/thinks/has the $$ for OEM parts all the time or for all applications.

I do use OEM 99.9% of the time on my 80, a lot less so with my 60.

That said there are good non-OEM parts for the rebuild of the gear box. I have seen the Gates kit used personally and the results have been fine.

That said, I did use OEM parts on my gear box. I don't mess around with aftermarket parts at all on critical components.

I've got a twisted sector shaft, but my steering box seems to be fine (not leaking fluid, making noises, etc), should I replace just my sector shaft/pitman arm with the upgraded parts or should I go ahead and get the gear box rebuilt while I have it off the truck?

Can you even replace just the sector shaft without the rebuild of the entire box?

Truck has ~150k miles fwiw...

Thanks,
Richard

You are going to be tearing apart the box to the point where a full rebuild of it makes sense.

I missed it I think what fluid is everyone using for the power steering?
