well, noticed today that my drivers seat power button that bends the seat back forward and back is broken, it will only go back and not forward. Wondering if anyone has any ideas on why? and how I should fix this. My passenger seat front to back button broke off but I can still push it forward and back by using a toothpick or other to push in there. I have read that the controls are ridiculous to buy new, do I need to scrounge up good used seats or ?, or can you pull a used control pieces to make it work?

any help appreciated on a fix.

I recently sold a seat control unit to ranma21 to fix his seat. Not sure what he did to fix it, but I sold him the entire control unit. I think you could find a used one in a junk yard for cheap. The one I sold was out of a seat I bought at the junk yard for $100 for the entire seat in good shape minus the leather.

I bought the driver's seat controlls from another member recently just to get the tilt button for my passenger side. I wanted it because I needed the taupe color and you can only buy black from the dealer now.

Let me know if you want the controlls (less the one switch button).

I was lying, I sold a different seat part to ranma21, I sold the switch controls to WarDamnEaagle. I can attest that the one he has is a fully functioning control module.

I took my 97 in for an alignment right after I purchased it in Texas last fall, getting ready to start the 1800 mile drive back to Virginia. When done with the alignment, I tried to put the seat back after the short legged mechanic parked it in the lot, and I found the seat would only go forward, not backwards-by the time I figured out no amount of forward would make it function properly, I was up against the dashboard. I drove it like that to Dallas (200 miles), dropped in at a Toyota Dealership, and they said the seat motor was shot and none in stock. I had them manually wind the seat back to the rear, drove to Virginia, took it apart, and the motor and switches were fine, but the white nylon screw that centers the seat drive mechanism was gone. Got a replacement for about $2.00 and put it all back together, it all works fine today. Point to that long tale is the drive may be jamming, only letting your seat move in one direction.

good info, thanks, I will probably take it apart here soon, funny that the stealership told you it was the motor and they did not even know that for sure....

was the nylon screw an OEM toy part or just something from a hardware store?

If it is the RECLINE function of the seat, the bit that "bends the seat back forward and back is broken", IIRC it is the switch mechanism, the function is controlled by a switch which just swaps the positive and negative over reversing the motor. The switch on the side of the seat will be the culprit.
On the 100 this is the case, the other functions go thru the ECU but the RECLINE function is via the switch only. and IIRC this is taken from the 80 and the same.

The nylon screw is an OEM Toy part and having that piece fall out is a fairly well-known issue that mud forum has discussed previously. CDan has replacements, and I think NAKMAN (forum member) also sells replacements.
Yes, I thought that the false diagnosis from that unnamed dealership was odd, since they had to take the seat out to wind it back manually, so should have been fairly easy to check function of seat motor and identify the real issue, a missing low dollar piece.

it is the recline funtion, good info here, wonder if the switch only is available through toyota? I thought I read or was told you had to buy the whole control unit and could not buy just piece by piece.
