I just installed the spring and WOW what a difference. Thanks for the info. Now I don't need that aftermarket air bag(whoppie cushion)!!!!

Glad to hear it helped.. Its even nicer once you're on the trails..

It doesn't look like I can do this mod to my 81 BJ42 3B. Does anyone have a solution to fix the light and touchy throttle. Is there anything I can adjust to make the throttle harder to push down and therefore less touchy?

I find my BJ74 has a tendency to surge. It is a torquey little engine to begin with. I have been told that a lot of JDMs had the injector timing advanced after the original owner had it pass initial smog inspections. Could this be part of a "lurching" or "surging" problem? This might explain why some do and some don't. Never had the injector timing checked, myself.

Glad to see it's not just mine! Thanks for posting Daryl. Unfortunately your photos don't show up for me. Could you try reposting? Since the original posting, has the exact matching spring been found? (part number?) or is that Princess Auto part the best option? Thanks

I've was thinking about this same problem (with my 82' BJ42) a little while ago.
IMHO it seems to occur because of the very small travel distance with the accelerator on the floor- between throttle all the way in and out is such a small distance that when the engine bunny hops the minute reactions of the foot (bouncing with the forward and back hopping) continue and amplify the engine bunnyhopping.
I can't wear boots when driving my BJ because I have less control of my foot and it bounces more with the bunnyhopping. With boots on it is either throttle in, or out, or somewhere between and bunnyhopping:mad: With lighter shoes I can now control pretty well, but it takes a lot of concious effort (and my ankle gets sore because of the effort).

I am going to try this as an idea-
Already there is plenty of room 'as is' right now for my accelerator to go further towards the floor if only the cable would allow it- however, I am going to increase this and bend the pedal further up-
then I am going to fab up a longer lever thingy (:hhmm:) on the other end of the throttle cable-
like this
IMGP2830-1.jpg

what I am aiming for is to increase (approx double) the travel of the accelerator on the floor, increasing the gearing as such, and decreasing the sensitivity to foot movement- or bouncing reaction to the engine bunnyhop.
What do you reckon?

For the people experiencing this lurching, can you tell if the brass bushings on your throttle plate shaft are sealing well?(The throttle plate shaft is the rod that goes from the lever in the photo above to the other side of the throttle body.) I have this lurching problem on my BJ42. It goes away when I seal the throttle shaft with silicone. I only used the silicone for testing purposes, it's not a good long-term fix.

My theory on this lurching and a leaky throttle shaft is that it changes the vacuum feedback signal to the metering rod on the injection pump. Those two hoses that go from the throttle body to the injection pump modify the fuel delivery curve based on vacuum feedback. If the throttle shaft leaks a certain amount in Position X but not X+/-Y degrees of rotation then your IP metering rod is going to move quite a bit with even the slightest amount of throttle plate movement.

I still haven't gotten around to finding a source for the brass bushings to fix mine permanently.

Damn I am stupid.
When I was tinkering yesterday, I noticed a little slack in my accelerator cable... fixed that up nice and tight and the majority of my lurching has become history. It is still possible, but even less likely now that I have learned to be so careful with my foot.
Yay for dumbass fixes:hillbilly:

Anyone has pictures? Really need to fix this issue as this Christmas Trip was almost ruined by it.

Wow after reading this, I'm thinking the suspension on mine may not be the problem, hopefully the OP will read this and re post those pictures - Please :)

Yes I have this prob on my jdm hj61 12 ht first time went 4wdriving was quite disappointed with in only mildly hilly terrain resorted to the hand throttle on the road not a problem really needs to be fixed makes it not a pleasant experience compared to other 4 wheel drives I have owned.

don't be disappointed, there must be a fix.

Yes exactly low and behold went out and checked the spring and I only have one on there this is what is great about forums. I love the car just first time out on the trails concentrating so hard not to lurch all over the place. Just want some progressive throttle control back plus the kids don't want whiplash again.

Thanks mark

Well it seems I made a mistake went out at night to first check and thought I had one spring checked in daylight I have actually got 2 springs on there, one covered with a protective black rubber so did not notice at night. Unless the springs are worn operated them from where springs mounted and seem plenty of resistance there. Hope I can fix this..

Hey guys,

Sorry its taken so long to upload the pics.. here they are.. I've been running with this 'fix' for 4 months now and is pretty much eliminated the touchy throttle. I am super pleased with this mod..

Yes, you can use the hand throttle in some cases, but when crawling over logs, rocks, etc, I didn't find that it worked all that well..

Location of Throttle control:

Loooking sraight down from the top of the engine. The spring clips over two pins that have an indentation to hold it from vibrating off.

hello, is it possible to postpone the photos? they do not appear anymore

I used a ‘dash pot’ to reduce the jerky throttle from idle in my hj61. It helped greatly as it slows the injector pumps return to idle. It still is touchy (which I quite like for some reason), but no where near as touchy as it was before....
I can take photos if anyone is interested...
