Possible to soften/dampen the lower tailgate when opening? (1 Viewer)

No updates on my end unfortunately. Perhaps if it was my truck and it was constantly bugging me I would have the initiative to figure something out, but because it’s my brother’s truck I just sorta forgot about it, ha. If a kit is developed I would definitely spring for it tho.

Once I saw this thread, I knew I needed a damped/slow close tailgate! I don't have the storage in my tailgate (do those kits even work with LX470s?!), but it just seemed so fancy! I dug through the threads on retrofitting the LX570 solution, but that seemed hard, expensive, and wouldn't help any future tailgate storage plans (just not strong enough).

I ending up using this (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07T72NLGC?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details) kit and modified (bent) the mounting brackets to make them fit. I had to drill a hole down in the tailgate - ideally, I wish I could have put two holes down there to prevent the bracket from rotating, but I slapped some Loctire PL Premium on it and then cranked that bolt down tight. It's held so far with light use - I'll update if there's an issue. Worst case, I'll pop the bracket off and weld a larger base on it to allow for a second bolt to prevent it from rotating,

For the upper mount, I just reused the hole for the drop-limiting strap. I had to bend the upper gas damper mount to get around the eyebolt for the strap - this probably could have been bent a little more, but it was just about the most I could do to get it this far with just a vice and a ballpeen hammer... I think the rubber dust collar on the gas damper rubs on the rubber strap eye cover, but not enough to leave any marks or make noise. It looks like there wouldn't be room in the below photo, but as everything starts moving they move away from each other:

Overall, I'm really happy with this. It doesn't slow down the overall drop much at all (like one of the solutions for the 80 series here on MUD), but it definitely damps it nicely!

Thanks! I'm curious how it'd perform with a storage tailgate - not sure if the inch or 2 of extension of the strut at the end of travel of the tailgate would be enough to slow down a loaded tailgate or not.

Heck yeah. I found a similar kit on Amazon and just ordered.
