Congrats Drew! If you got more than 93%, Bill owes you beer. If I can ever make another meeting, or preferably a run, I'm making him pay up :grinpimp:

I can't imagine learning all that stuff in 3 days. But you got your HF privileges, so you can immediately start forgetting it all!

Phil, how did you make out?

Not so good, I'll be taking a make up test on Thusday (July 19)

I don't own a single PC (9 Macs) so I wasn't able to run the quizzer until Drew lent me a spare laptop on Friday. The quizzer pretty much makes or breaks you and the test is difficult without it. I still have Drew's laptop (Thanks!) so I will be quizzing myself frantically. I expect better results the second time around.
BTW. I got 69%

Oh that sucks - 1 point away! Oh well, with the quizzer and a few more days I bet you'll get into the 80s easy.

I reluctantly put Boot Camp and Windoze on my MBP just to run the quizzer. It works really well, and now I can use Garmin's GPS software and the programming software for the FT8800 without resorting to a seperate PC.

The worst part of it is there was one question that the instructors gave us the wrong answer too the day before and everyone got it wrong. I'm sure Phill will pass next time with flying colors.

bj70_guy, How do you like the FT8800? It seems to be the radio that Stan form Com-West is recommending for our application. hopping to pickup a radio before the weekend so I can get it installed and learn how to use it before Whipsaw.

I haven't had much of a chance to play with the 8800 yet - I've only been home for 9 days in the last 2 months. Having said that, so far it seems really cool. I like the idea of using one side for the run frequency and the other side to monitor logging frequency, or a repeater if someone was trying to meet up, etc. It's like 2 radios in one. I think I need an external speaker for it though. It's pretty hard to hear in the 70 with the windows down.

I doubt you'd be UNhappy with it. I think it was about $130 or so more than the FT7800, which is dual band but not dual recieve. The 7800 has lit buttons on the faceplate and a much bigger display (only has to show one frequency at a time) which are both nice.

FWIW, if you want a really cheap way in, I noticed hamcity.com sells the FT2800 for a whopping $118 US - half of what they go for here.

If you're mounting the ham remotely like I have in the '60 then an external speaker is essential!

I'm still looking for one to mount in the dash on the '60 where there is a spot for a single speaker.

Anyone have a single 6"x8" that they don't need (or know where to get one)? It needs a mounting eye at each end [2 total] about 8 1/2" apart I think.

I got Stan to order me a FT8800 this afternoon and picked up a dual band antena so I can get it installed and feed line routed. I think the main unit will fit under the passanger seat and the head unit on the dash, but we will have to see how everything fits and if I can hear it from under the seat

Did he say they had one in the warehouse? When I bought my 8800 I also ordered a VX-6R. He figured about a week. It's been 9 so far and no word yet. I'm giving up and mail ordering if it's not there by the time I get home.

OTOH, my bro in law ordered an Icom V8000 and got it 3 days later.

If you could ask him if it ever came in that would be very helpful, thanks.

Stopped by to see if my radio showed up today and found out that his supplier backordered it and he is not expecting it and yours untill the Aug, 2nd, 3ed or 7th if everything there are no other problems. I think I will be giving Radio World a call tomorrow and see if they have one in stock. I would like to have it installed a little before Whipsaw so I can learn how to use the basics.

I put in an order with Radio World late last night, they emailed me back this morning saying they had a VX-6R in stock and it had already been shipped out. Good luck with the FT8800.
