Getting ready to install an old school HKS Turbo Timer. New in box!!!

Now that I've got the EGT gauge hooked up, I've noticed that it's VERY easy to get into the +1200F to 1400F if I stay on the throttle. One area that I haven't modified is the air intake at the air clearer. Is a very small 2.5". I think this intake is restricting airflow at full throttle. Working on increasing intake size to 4". Lets see how it goes...

you could also get the top from a FZj80 1986/1987 model year, has bigger outlet and domed outlet top where the wingnut is at.
Yes, thank you. The outlet of the VM73 lid is something like 2"! VERY SMALL. I am using the top from a HDJ80. It has the 3" outlet. Working on increasing the inlet to the filter housing.

Hey Chris,

Great progress on the swap!

Could you shed some light on how did you get the factory Tach to work/communicate with the 1HDT?

Did you use the sensor on the injection pump or did you use some other sort of signal to feed the Tach?

Looking forward to hear how you made this work, as I will need to cross that bridge somewhat soon :D

Thanks, Chris!

Hello Alberto!
I spent a TON of time with different tach converters, etc. I could not get any of them to work. The solution I ultimately went with was to use a tach from a lj7x. They tach signal sending unit on the 1HD-T pump and the 2LT tach "speak the same language". I have not wire up the boost lights and do not plan to do that in the near future. Tach work and reads perfectly. Tach fits in place of the original without modification. If I remember correctly, I ran the two wires from the injector pump to the back of the instrument cluster and used small ring connectors to connect the wiring to the tach.

The next question is, do you have another one of these LJ7x Tachs???

I will probably be needing one

Thanks again, Chris!!

Marwan,
I'd say the short answer is no. Post this as a new thread in the Diesel Tech section. You'll get a lot more feedback there. Good luck!

Hello all! I’ve been away from the Forum for a while and haven’t been working on my truck for over a year. I’ve been focus on others areas of life and now that they are sorted, I’m back with a vengeance.
Last year, I was in the process of replacing the 80 series A442f with full time transfer case with a A440f (JDM HZJ77) and part time transfer case. The A440 wasn’t my first choice, but it was working, I coujd bout it right in and get the truck running “Quickly”. I ended up damaging the transmission fluid pump by not seating the torque converter properly. That was last September...
Yesterday, I dropped of a fully hydraulic A442F from a 1991/92 JDM HDJ80 at the transmission shop for a rebuild and installation of a FJ62 output shaft. Once done, I’ll be having the shop install the transmission for me.
Currently, I’m working to install ALL of the various parts, bits and stuff I’ve been accumulating and getting the truck BUILT. I’m in the process of installing an 80 series elocker in the rear and a 80 series rear diff with ARB in the front. The VM trucks can with 4.56 gears, the 80s have 4.10. This is going to help drop the RPMs at highways speed and quiet things down for me. I’m not worried about power loss, but we’ll see how she drives with the higher gears.
Install of elocker rears have been covered in other places. Changing to two longer studs and grinding away part of the axle housing was all that needed to be done. I used the elocker diff gasket to mark the area that needs led to be removed. I used a cutting disk to make a bunch of cuts and a grinding wheel to remove the rest. I also needed to get a short side axle with longer splines to work with the locker.

Chris I know this is an old post. I am doing the same coversion from a BJ73 2.5 TD portuguese to a 1HZ. I am looking to get the HZJ73 Frame mounts. I have the motor mounts, but the original ones do not line up at the right angle. Can you assist? Where did you get your HZJ73 frame mounts from?
