"Popping" Undercarriage

It's a good thought but the entire length of the exhaust system is tight. The noise is more of a binding then releasing "pop!" type of sound, not a tinging metal sound, if that helps. That's the best way I can describe it.

This sounds dumb maybe, but are there any broken mounts for your front mudflaps?(If you have them). I have one that confounded me forever til I realized the bolt/screw was gone and the mudflap was smacking the firewall/flare. Felt it right on my left foot. Thought body mount too like many here.

Didn't bother fixing it, but at least I know why it makes that damn noise when I back out of my driveway or hit some heavy snow/slush now. :hillbilly:

X2 on the body mounts though more likely.

Good luck:cheers:

How about the third row seats? If installed and in the stored position are they securely strapped down with no movement? If just loosely strapped they bang around and make some weird noises.

It's not the mud flaps or third row seats.

Thanks.

I think some people have reported the body mount under the driver seat coming loose. You could check that if you haven't already. Also, take a look at your bushings (shocks, panhard, swaybar). I used a crowbar to check some of my bushings.

Took another trip up to the farm today and it was popping just like last week--hard and often (TWSS). Time to zero in on the front driveshaft or bushings I suppose. Frustrating. Truck still drives very well so I at least think things are safe.

Thanks for all of the replies thus far. Keep 'em coming. :)

:hhmm:
For about year I had a weird ping/pop (sometimes multiple) whenever I accelerated. It finally turned out to be a loose bolt on my motor mount! The nut was about to fall off the threads of the bolt.

HTH

Really? I wonder if this is the odd noise I have.

Yeah yeah, I probably look like a idiot because i've known the drivers side motor mount bolt has been loose for almost over 2 years:whoops:

...and just like that, it's less noticeable today. I may throw a new set of sway bar bushings on it. A couple are worn but not terrible. I hate to throw parts at a rig but I believe they are pretty inexpensive.

Not sure if it is the same noise I had but mine came from my radiator skid plate the one by the steering dampner and also from the cross member by the tranny....

Interesting. It's not the skid plate but I did look the transmission cross member over quite a bit and even re-torqued all of the bolts. Was your's pretty loose?

Not really and they don't need to be to make the noise.

The small front skid plate actually made more noise when I forgot to really tighten it good.

I removed the sway bar from the frame mounts so I could get a better feel if anything was amiss. Everything checked out fine. I'm continuing to drive it each day until I can figure it out. As stated, it drives very well just like it has since I bought it back in '09.

I'm beginning to wonder if something has let go in the front axle. I think if it has that I would hear a constant sound, however.

I've been strongly considering for a few months now, moving up to a 100 series but want to get this tracked down first just for the satisfaction and to provide a solid rig to the next potential owner.

I'm considering a V8 4Runner as well but I would miss this site too much if I did that. :)

Hope you track it down soon!

For me (my opinion) the 80 is better off road, the 100 (had one)better on road and the 4runner (my brother had the 3rd, 4th, and now the 5th) is the smaller version of the 100.

Good luck on deciding which one, they are all good.

Thought I would provide a quick update. The popping seems to have taken a vacation the past few weeks. Today, I drove on the same 60-mph road that will usually make it pop frequently and it behaved very well--no popping at all. This leads me to believe it was suspension-related and something finally re-seated itself and is probably not a big deal. I'll crawl under it again this week and see if I can spot anything.

Well, the popping is back. I think it may be a spring slipping on its perch. When cresting a sharp hill it releases the suspension a bit and pops. Very odd and hit or miss.

I may jack it up by the frame to release the springs and investigate.

Just and FYI...

I have a similar problem with my truck, definitely suspension related as it happens regularly when braking or sometimes bumps. Loads when braking and releases when the accelerating as well...

Guess it could also be a sticking caliper something or other...

Did you put the new sway bay bushings in yet?

I had a popping that occured as you describe and it was the sway bar bushings up front. When they failed failed it became more of a pop/squeak. cheap and easy fix and my vote for the likely suspect.

I currently have a similar popping after a trailside draglink swap I suspect is a TRE, but sounds like you did a good job checking that.

a shot of wd-40 on the spring perches can quiet them down but thats usually a squeak.

As well ConcreteJungle had a popping that turned out to be a loose control arm bolt/nut. I imagine it was derived from wheeling but not to say 15yrs of potholes couldnt do it as well. Follow the FSM or ask to clarify but I believe the NUT is staked and you must tourqe on the bolt itself. Anyone confirm?

Had some time this afternoon and finally got around to pulling the sway bar off. Popping still seems to be there I'm afraid. The troubleshooting continues. Thanks for your suggestions. Keep them coming!
