I've read many posts the last three weeks trying to determine the source of a dull popping sound I can both hear and feel in the floorboard. I was hoping I could figure it out without having to start my own thread but alas, here I am. It actually seems to be coming from the middle of the chassis somewhere. The best I can describe it is as if something is shifting around (bushing, spring perch?). Truck is completely stock and I've noticed no difference in the way it drives with this pop. It started a couple of days after I rotated my tires which I believe is just a coincidence. At any rate, I pulled the front tires again and reinstalled for good measure.

It wasn't too bad at first and then became more pronounced. This past Sunday, it was popping even on the highway when I would hit small ridges in the road @ 60 mph, driving to my late Grandpa's farm for some fishing. The washed out dirt road back to his farm pond drove it crazy (caught a lot of fish in case you were wondering). Since I've been back in the city, almost no popping. It's very sporadic. I also thought it may be an engine miss traveling down the frame but have ruled that out.

I've been under the vehicle several times and have put a wrench on every nut and bolt I can find and have read about. Everything is tight (caliper bolts, knuckle studs, sway bar mounts, control arms, shock mounts, body mounts, steering stabilizer, etc). I've checked the rear too. The sway bar mounts are not broken where they meet the frame. Axle rebuild in November 2009. The wheel bearings are tight. No 12-6 play. I check the wheel bearings regularly and pre-load remains in the 9-10 range. Pulling hard on a pry bar under the tire yields no movement. My driver's side TRE may be getting close to having some movement but I've really got to shake the wheel very hard at 3-9 to feel even the slightest movement. I don't think this is the problem.

At this point I'm almost thinking it may be in the driveline. I recently greased the drive shafts but had trouble getting grease into the front slip yoke. Possibility? I get no driveline pop or clunk when I pull away from stop signs however. Motor mount? Just throwing out ideas.

Thanks in advance,

Mark

What about where they meet the axle? Look closely, it was hard to spot on mine. Your description matches perfectly.

Did not appear to be but I will triple-check. Should you be able to move them by hand if they are broken? I shook the heck out of everything I could get a hold of under the truck and nothing budged.

:hhmm:
For about year I had a weird ping/pop (sometimes multiple) whenever I accelerated. It finally turned out to be a loose bolt on my motor mount! The nut was about to fall off the threads of the bolt.

HTH

Any chance you have urethane mounts/bushings for anything?

If so, they can make that kind of noise when dry - a light hit of lithium grease when installed prevents this, IDK how often it happens as you don't usually see it on any install instructions.

:hhmm: I have the same problem; I’ve been able to narrow it down to this.

· Driver’s seat, I need to remove it and check all bolts, nuts, & bushings exxx.

· Frame to front control Arm busing

Not sure if this helps but I haven’t really dove in, it’s annoying as hell but haven’t had the time to deal with the problem.

Bone stock rig. All rubber mounts and bushings.

On mine I found it to be the sliders that were causing the issue. Do you have sliders on yours? If so check the front mounting point, it can rub against the front control arm mounting.

Moving the slider a few MM fixed my popping noise.

Negative sliders. Bone stock rig.

When I had the problem it was a broken weld where the swaybar mounts at the axle on the passenger side. With only the one side broken it had enough pressure on it that it wouldn't move when parked and the broken weld wasn't obvious. Once on the road the axle would move up and down and the noise would start. It sounded and felt as if it was under the front pass floor. A close visual with a flashlight should reveal it. I just went to the muffler shop and asked them to weld it back on. Cheap fix if that's your problem. hth

Too much grease in the slip yolk? Not allowing it to slide will transfer the energy to other areas. Maybe that is your popping...the unloading of that energy?

I'm hoping this is the issue. Sure seems like a good possibility. Warm temps here today so I'll crawl back under it and look things over with a fine-toothed comb.

I briefly considered that as well but I always put such a small amount of grease in the yoke that I doubt it. Good call though.

I had the same problem and finally tracked it down to a broken return spring in the rear ebrake set up inside the rear disc brake hub.

It resonated throughout the truck and was a bear to pinpoint.

Good luck!

Well since nobody has suggested it yet...

Have you checked you exhaust system for a ny brokenor loose hangers or mounts?

Everybody should be checking this periodically. Those mounts are pretty wimpy and it's not obvious until they break. Then bad sh!t happens (like broken brake and ABS lines).

Checked the axle and frame sway bar mounts again. Looked them over extremely well from all angles. They look fine. Shocks are tight but I did put a couple more turns on them for good measure. I guess we'll see if it wants to reveal itself in due time.

I was thinking this but assumed that a sound you describe as "popping" might not seem to be the exhaust, and if it had you would have checked it early on.

I had something akin to popping that I thought was a bushing and ended up being my exhaust.

Worth a shot?
