simply, database delays. They were occurring ONLY on the forum database, and the forum rolled to the 'offline' page a few times in the past week. Since the main 'MUD site, the RockCrawler site, and a few others on my server were all still functional, it was easy to narrow down what queries were causing the issue. The 'offline' page appears should the index.php page be non-responsive for 10 seconds.

The buildup of PM's finally overwhelmed it's use...it's just not designed to manage the volume, particularly if someone was searching. There are 'only' 150 or so users with over 500 pm's, but those with large PM boxes and those users accessing at similar times meant an adjustment was required.

500 is still 5x what non-star'd members get :)
 
Seems like that's a terrible query if it's quering your entire PM table just to show how many PM's are unread.

If you tweak the query it shouldn't matter if someone has 10 PM's or 10000, as long as they're not all unread.....

long term, new software...been working with one for about a year now and really like it, but a few features needed are not yet available.

vBulletin is riddled with terrible queries...but it's not designed for 7m posts and 50,000 pm's either...it peaks at 2m posts and then you start spending money...er, customizing :)

There are a LOT of things that are tweaked on the back end...more than I can even remember anymore...the big one is Search. Unless you throw some huge $$$ hardware into the game, Search simply does not work with vBulletin forums over 2m posts.

Sorry for the glut of PM's, I am down to 160 and will shave that down even further this evening.
 
Wow, I had 789. Now I have 76. :doh:

And...down to 8. Just as well, I was storing stuff in there that will be more secure in another place. ;)

I've chipped mine down to 486 from nearly 700. I'll keep working on it.
 
from 646 to 1 :)
 
What I found that was easier was to sort by title (they also have "sender" as an option). This way I can see the threads of either a title or senders and quickly sort through what I wanted/needed. :cheers:
