- not sure if you have the CEL -22 specifics or not , ?

- double check that THW and E2 are not crossed or mixed up with one another ................

- double check the sensor itself , make sure it is simply NOT a faulty part in the equation ?

- pull off the new connector plug inspect if terminals are in good order and making positive mechanical contact ...

- then follow ALL the step by steps below , including if the ECU needs a Polarized stand alone ground wire maybe ?

- E1 is indeed a stand alone , Negative ground path needed .....

Awesome info Matt.
On it early this week with my technician.

I can’t add any technical knowledge but I will say I was concerned with the brittleness of the water temp sensor wiring when I changed mine. Sounds like proper signal may not be getting to the ECU since redtoy confirmed 22 is only related to the temp sensor.

You’re already on to that being a possible culprit.

I’d also verify the sensor is working properly or get another. Also already mentioned.

Another thought is inspecting the ECU internals. Maybe something has gone bad on a board.

Today I am hopeful borderline gleeful but Ive been here before.
Started tracing the wires from the sensor to the ECU.
Found two different places where they were buggered, once close by the sensor itself (kinked and insulation broken AND it would be in a position to touch metal) and the second where I started tracing the ground off the ECU where the metal arm which changed HVAC from internal air to external air was worn through.
Addressed both. On my second long test drive today and thus far no CEL codes.

Appreciate all of your comments and advice. Toyota matt was great getting me sensors and nee plug and play harnesses.

At this point my bet is
1. Buggered wires (hopefully Ive handled that)
2. If it returns, after full FSM checks as shown in Toyota matts note above then I’ll source an ECU. Luckily Im only an hour and a half away from cruiserparts in Sullivan NH

Just closing this one out. No question I needed the sensors for the water housing and I most certainly buggered a wire but the real culprit turned out to be a ground that wasn’t re-connected after replacing the intake/exhaust manifold gaskets.
