Yeah, this unit has only been out for 2-3 months and is the only unit you can get navigation with for such a low price. Plus you can score one on eBay for only $700. It is definitely on my list since my local shop took me out back to the owners son's ride and they had just installed it. You can also get a disc off of eBay that will let you over right the DVD controls to allow you to watch DVD's while the vehicle is in gear.

As for the antenna I just put mine in the middle below the windshield between the whipper blades. Quick & EZ....

Is the GPS a subscription, or is it just a pay for the unit and it's all yours thing?
Also, does the GPS get it's signal from the car's stock antenna, or is there an antenna you have to wire through your rig to the outside?

I wish I had that much money right now.... I'm tired of this stock CD player that skips when I go over bumps.

Mr. Tomatopants, GPS as you know it was developed by the US Department of Defense and is currently maintained by the US Air Force 50th Space Wing. Its usage is free as a public service.

Poindexter, convince me (say "you need this!" or something similar) to buy the AVIC-D3! I need a way to rationalize the purchase with myself. ;)

 on a great writeup

Beautiful work. Unfortunately where I live I doubt that install would be in the truck for more than a day before the window was smashed and the unit was stolen.

Excitement, joy, failure, sadness

I got my D3 Tuesday, installed it Tuesday night/Wednsday. Nav could not get a fix to save my life. I thought I did something wrong so I took it to a shop who declared the unit faulty :(

The shop suggested a Kenwood DDX 7019 which uses a Garmin module which together normally go for 1400.00. I got them for 800.00 installed, down side is he was out of stock on the 7019 so I have to wait until next week. The good news is I can use my Kenwood 10 disk changer & there is no NAV DVD so I can listen the optical drive & use the NAV (not possible in the D3 as it needs the DVD for NAV.

I'll post pictures after it is installed.

Thanks. I am sad as it was great in all other respects but the NAV was the main Wife selling point so obviously it's not working got her going with the "tech stinks song"

I finally got the NAV in here are the pictures. It is great & fits perfectly. The stereo/Video are great.

if you still have your stock head unit, disassemble it and take the face off of it. ...:grinpimp:

x 2. I was going to suggest the same thing. Just get any double-din unit and make a false-front.

My buddy took a 1st gen 4Runner deck and did that. Cost him $5 at a wrecker.

it just slips on, snug
store it in the top console
I'd love to see a picture as this is my main concern/least liked feature of this deal.

I just purchased the Pioneer avic-D3 and will be installing it in my LX450.

Just a couple of questions for those who have it installed:

Did you use the factory amp or did you remove it and connected the speakers directly to the headunit. Which option would sound better?

If I remove the factory amp, will I lose the use of the factory sub or does the sub have a separate amp?

Thanks for your help!
Alex

A little off topic but I just put one of these in my new tow van as I have a Toyota Nav in the 80 .
I buy the most sold van in the USA that hasn't changed its dash in 8years and I still have to fab a dash kit ( I was told I couldn't do it and it wouldn't fit) :flipoff2: to them.

Hit this web site (http://avic411.com/ ) to mod the wiring to make it do more stuff like set it while at a light etc.

Very cool unit .
