Pintle versus hitch

I have also towed my boat and small utility trailers around town with a pintle. No issues at all.

A bit of a thread hijack: I have my pintle for sale in the classifieds if anyone is interested. (My new bumper has a class III built-in)

I installed eye-bolts prior to putting the chain plate on mine. I don't recall exactly, but they came from either Fastenal or the local farm big box. They were rated, but don't recall what it was.

as far as I'm concerned this is essentially a non-issue anyway as I'd prefer to have a real frame-mounted receiver hitch. Much more versatile in what you can put on there or tow with it. Also, potentially more protection for rearenders and for slamming on the ground while wheeling. One possible con is loss of ground clearance, but that can be alleviated somewhat by using the kind with same-height hitch box.

Or better still, get a real bumper with integrated receiver... :)

Do any of you know a good source for just the eye-bolts? I suppose I could run down to the hardware store, but I worry about the strength.

I originally used eye bolts but switched to a chain plate. It's much better and is way stronger than even the highest rated eye bolts.

Thought about going the OEM pintle/eye-hook route but the cost was an issue for me. Got some brand new chain plates made locally, thanks to WarDamnEagle n Fantom... Speaking of which I still have some for sale... Look in my Sig ;)

I don't plan on towing large object, just a utility trailer n a M101 one day....

My crossmember has a sticker on it that says 'max 5000 lbs trailer weight, max 500 lbs tongue weight.' Pretty sure the PO put it there for gits and shiggles. But it's official looking enough to keep me out of trouble haha!
