PIG + Chebby Avalanche Trim =?

Tagged me in the white area, luckily not the cornea :whew: Happened Sunday & I didn't go to the doc till yesterday :rolleyes: I felt the piece hit & figured it deflected out, no worries as it didn't bother me. Monday, got REALLY tired & left work early afternoon - struggled to keep my eyes open, & went straight to bed. Tuesday, the sunlight was killin me & it felt like I had a hair in my eye. Wed AM finally inspected it up close & saw a dot in my eye, by then a rust ring had formed & that's when the opthamologist had to scrape w/ his rotary tool. Doctor vi$it$ + a $35.00 small bottle of steriod eyedrops = spendy little chunk of grinder disk :mad:

Cage Top Brackets Installed:

Finished this area, now onto the tailgate barrel bolt latch mount. I'm about done with the rear end of the :pig: All that's left to do is make the gas tank inlet & a lotta painting. Rear suspension link attachments will be after that :bounce:

Gas Tank Inlet:

In the middle of figuring out the finished look. I'll hafta flare out the end part to get the gas cap & it's flange mount inside. There's no way I can fit the stock gas tank expansion tank anywhere upwards & hidden. I think I'll check out a local yard & see what I can find that fits in the boxed out area behind the rear doors.

Gettin Close........

Bout done, just gotta locate the gas cap flange, add a few mounting tabs cuz this will be removeable, & also add a hinged cover. The O.D. of the Chebby S-10 gas tank tube is exactly the same as the stock :pig: so that's a time saver :bounce2:

99% Done...

Couple mounting tabs & cap flange & I'm finished w/ this. I used "easy welding" 1/8" mat'l for the enclosure & have since added the door, hinge & catch. Yeah, that's cabinet hdwe. :rolleyes: but it works! I have a bunch of little stuff & painting to do right now....

Thanks man, I'm really pushing things as you can tell from my :doh: latest injury :rolleyes: Actually, I've been fortunate enough to not have any other injuries on this or even my 40 build. I have had weld burn due to wearing a short sleeve shirt before :mad: I DO my *best to practice safe working techniques & will from now on ALWAYS wear my safety glasses :cool:

When you starting a build thread dude? I wanna see some of the creations built by your off road "shop" ;p

Got most of the painting done - it's all drying now. Except for the sheetmetal parts (I sanded & applied 2 coats), all pieces got 3 coats - POR15, then Tie Coat Primer & finally Rustoleum paint. I hand brushed everything :hillbilly: Next pic it'll be fully assembled :bounce:

Subscribed to this thread a while back as i wanted to see how the avalanche trim could be transformed into metal, seem´d kinda tricky when I thougt about it and I gotta say it´ll probably look killer when its finished, but chevy avalanche won´t be what I think about first when I see that rear end! :hhmm: anyways, Lookin' awesome man, keep up the good work!

:frown: Yeah, I knew I was deviating from my original plan, but I'd rather be a little more creative using tube than just capping the rear sheetmetal sides & taking a chance on bashing up the rear corners. Besides, the rear tailgate *seems to go better w/ the tubed out theme :D

I've started piecing the gas tank connection together & have also begun to gut the doors of all the extra weight. I've cut out the tops, so they're half doors, but not your average half doors :bounce2: Why can't I just leave stock alone........ :zilla: Thanks for the thumbs up ;p
 
Starting The Half Doors:

Got all the initial rough cuts done. This is gonna be a time killa. I'll still use the factory hinges & armrests - I'll relocate the front armrests higher due to the raised seats. Now, the door latches & strikers, I have no :idea: what I'm gonna use yet :shrug: Next, I'll be cutting the inner pieces & capping the tops. Not to mention tackling all the inner rusted sills & knocking out bondo.

Typical Door Bottom ;(

Here's what I'm currently working on --> cut out *most of the bondo & am welding in new metal. A little filler is okay, but not gobs of it :mad: I gotta find some weldable metal to join the inner & outer panels to ;p I still have to do a bunch of patchwork too........ I thought about just making some tube doors, but that tube is gettin outta hand already :rolleyes: I ain't givin up on this sheetmetal like I did the rear section ;)

No need to find weldable metal down that low, just replace it with plate. Why not just cut the door skin at like 8 inches and just make is super stout for "impact" resistance. ;) It's not like the weight is an issue.....:flipoff2:

Did you not notice the outer door views? That's what I'm doing. The inside panels aren't *that bad, it was the bondo'd exterior panels that I cut out ;p Too much work to take out the whole bottom panels, so I left a few inches around the cutout. The outers will be used to take hits since they're braced to the door frames. Wait & see.......
