Were import laws different in the 90s so that cars younger than 25 years could be imported? Or was it foreign diplomat owned prior and brought into the country? Or is your last name Moneybags and you payed the big bucks to make it legal? Looks really cool. I like that one more than the newer ones.
I don't how they imported it over to the US back in the 90s and it has been federalized, I know it had a clean SC title that went back in the 90s and GA titled without question. No "moneybags" here, just lucky and being in the right place at the right time. While drive through Walhalla, SC my wife says "Hey there was one of those Mercedes SUV's back there in the weeds", I turned around and sure enough it was a surrounded with weeds behind a body shop. I called the body shop the next day and he gave me the owners contact info, called him and was told that it had been sitting for a few years and didn't run. We went up the following weekend with my trailer and some cash, made owner an offer and hooked up some jump cables and after a hits of ether the inline 6 fired up. It run really rough at first but smoothed out after a few mins, we put some air in couple of the tires and I drove it around body shop's yard and onto my trailer. I looked up the prices on used older G Wagens after we get and I saw a few that were selling and have sold for double/triple what we paid. Our's is even in better shape with some very rare options like the rear barn doors and PTO, it even has a working aftermarket AC system. With very little work I made it road worthy, drained the old gas, replaced ignition module, reset the timing, and a basic tune up. There was a binder with a Mercedes engine manual and a bunch of receipts from the owner, one receipt is very awesome, a complete engine rebuild in 2007 at 6200 miles. There was 6640 miles on it when I got it, sure it could have rolled over but I don't think so. The owner parked it in 2011 and prior to that he only drove a few times a year (yeah so he says) but he seemed a honest guy. Right now the only thing that isn't working on it is the hydraulic diff locks, I had to rebuild the master cylinders and had to order a couple of parts. As for parts availability there is a few G-Wagen/Unimog parts dealers in the US and one of the better ones is located in Oakwood, Ga. Yes some of the parts are expensive but so are some of the Land Cruiser parts. I have driven to Cheaha Mountain Al and to North Ga a couple of times exploring forest roads. There are a few odds and ends that need to be addressed but nothing that stops it from being driven.
It is more of my Wife's hobby vehicle altough I enjoy driving/wheeling it. She wanted a FJ60 but every one we found in our price range was rusted out or she wasn't happy with something about it. I was supprised that she said that she wanted the G Wagen after we saw it.
Thanks and sorry for the long reply.
