I extended my diff breather line on the front axle, but I'm conflicted on where to mount in the engine bay and what type filter to use. If you've done this mod and wouldn't mind posting pics to this thread, that would be appreciated!

I did mine a couple of weeks ago. I pretty much pulled it straight up and zip tied it to a spare piece of bracket. Rather than risk water falling down into the filter I put some extra tubing with a bend. In the rear I vented into the driver side quarter panel. Just left this one open since much less risk of falling water getting into the quarter panel compartment.

Exactly what I was looking for...thanks! I was concerned about water getting in too...the extra line bending downward seems like a good idea.

This is what I did. I have since changed my makeshift clamps made out of plumbing strap to clamps I purchased at Lowe's (shameless plug for my employer). This is mounted on my firewall above the brake booster. Notice the tubing on the left is pointed downward as well. Not sure why this matters any but that's what others did.
Right on the firewall, DS. These are special Toyota Red filters, match the coolant. The copper pipe hanger is there for character, will use a permanent marker with ARB on it for classier vintage.

It has been determined that green coolant is superior to red coolant. The experts have ruled on this. Time to update your filter...and coolant.

This. I can add a pic when it's light out - both mine are simple fuel line run to cheap fuel filters & all ziptied to the coils of the hard brakeline coils under the master cylinder.
$20. Handled.
Mount it? I just let the filter dangle....
Looking at the pictures in this thread, I am confused as to what direction the filters. Do the arrows point toward, or away from the diffs?
Only make sense to extend them beyond the snorkel so you can go real deep.

depends what state you are in.
If you are in Colorado, you can go unfiltered (with the good dope!)
In California, they like it backwards, as things always go in the out door, and you have to rotate them on counterclockwise (they get screwed always)
In your girlfriends name is Kimberly Spitz or Stephanie Swallows, you have to put them on backwards, because it sucks! (not blows!)
In Texas, you need a bigger filter.
If you are actually going to be in water, above the top of the hood, where this filter resides, it does not matter, as you engine is dead and you are sinking.

Some of us extend our diffs not only for fording, but because our diff check valves have malfunctioned, and we are tired of birf soup.
The Red coolant is also known as the Sith coolant, can do evil things but powerful. The Green is the Jedi coolant, does good all the time but can get compromised. Whatever you do, Dr. Egon, dont cross the streams.
Ok, I will talk slower. You want these to breathe, so there is no check valve. blow in both sides and they both move air through it. The direction arrow on these are because they are for fuel, so they are made to be able to seal with the liquid flowing through them.
So, in summary it does not matter.
