Well the PHH on our 95 went out and by the time it was caught, the motor was fried. 178k. Still trying to decide what to do with it. Defiantly going to keep it. It will get a Vortec, but we may just get another LC and slowly build this one. Found a 97 Lexis with lockers for 6k we are going to look at. Funny thing about it is I was going to put it in the shop to get it replaced next week.

Another one bites the dust. Sorry to hear man. But a 97 with lockers for $6 sounds nice right now. Im kind hoping my A/C really is bad so I can convince myself to get new 80. But then again, I am too cheap for that (or I'd like to think so.

:( it's a sneaky *****, I had ordered my PHH silcone replacement, 2 days before it showed up, mine went..

Wow am I glad I finally changed mine last week. It had been riding in the glove box
for god knows how long. For those blowing off there PHH , JUST DO IT!!! It's really not
that hard, only took about 45 minutes. I prolly spent more time reading about it, which
is also prolly why it went so smooth. Thanks Mud!!! Steve

Well after looking at the available money, I'm just going to replace the engine with another one.

I still like the I5 votec we spoke about at round up, but under stand the money constraints far to well.

and what is a PHH?

EDIT: nevermind, search is your friend

Sorry to hear about your PHH taking out your motor. Maybe you could help us unexperienced LC owners and tell how it had gone but you didn't realize it?!

Best luck to you

The PHH didn't blow. It cracked and leaked out coolant. The danger about it, is it location. It leaked toward the road. Therefore it did not spray on anything causing steam. Looked down temp guage was on H. Pulled over, popped the hood and oil had ooozed out from the head gasket in the front.

After I put the next engine in, I'm trying to find someone that sales rebuilt engines, I'm going to make 3 additional changes:
1. Temp gauge mod
2. Coolant low mod
3. Develop the habit that when I look at my speed odometer, look at all the gauges too.

For 1 and 2, it would be nice to have a buzzer. And yes, I will be putting in the silicone PHH kit.

I think I ran across a rebuilt '95 FZJ80 engine on craigslist in DFW region. Cant remember the price but may be worth looking into. I was simply searching for "land cruiser", I will have to see if I can find it.

My condolences, thanks for sharing. Just ordered mine, on the ASAP To-Do List now

Warpdriv, you've been a member since 2003. 7 years now and you never read where replacing the PHH was recommended?

Yea, Yea, Yea... When I replaced the starter it looked ok. I had planned to replace it next week along with other things. When I put the replacement engine in, i'm going with the silicone kit.

Anyone know of anyone that sells rebuilt long blocks?

Just talked with ATK, they have a 3/36,000 warranty for parts and labor. They also hot test their motors, meaning after the rebuild, they run them. i don't know how long for though. The cost includes shipping of the new motor and picking up of the old one. $4039. I need to call them back and ask them how much of the labor rate do they cover. Talking with other shops as I find them...

silicone PHH kit.

Moving over from the 100 club and learning about the 80. I have FSM but can't find a good picture of the hose. Could someone show me a picture and a part number for the silicone kit?

I wonder if using synthetic oil would help protect the engine from the excess heat, if you didn't catch the rising temp gage right away?

A similar situation happened to me and I often wondered if it was the synthetic oil that saved my engine.

I use Mobil 0W-40 exclusively.

Funny you mention the Mobil syn 0-40, thats what I have been using around here and she has been really happy (Southern Oregon)

Yeah a pic of the PHH (location) would be very helpful.

regarding synthetic. Is it ok to run that if you know you have leaks? I'm running 15w-40 right now because the thinner oil drips out more. So, synthetic probably isn't an option for me huh?!

The PHH is on the lower left or drivers side of the engine. Its best to find a friend with long skinny arms to help change it out. Sorry to hear about your motor. I can smell coolant leaks from a 1000 yards thanks to PHH paranoia!

well, if you're already leaking I wouldn't use $7 a quart oil.

Fix the leaks then go with the Mobil 0-40, or continue as-is with conventional oil.
