PERU in T Minus 4 Days

One month from today I will be in the air on my way to Lima, Peru. Have any of you ever been? Do you think I could possibly get something cool for the cruiser there that I can't get here in the states?
I am flying into Lima with my GF and her brother and we get in around 11:30 at night. We then have a 6:00 AM flight to Cuzco so we will hopefully hit up a bar at the airport till' it closes and then try to catch some shut eye till' our flight leaves in the AM. We then will be in Cuzco for a couple of days before the Inti Rama (Winter Solstice) Festival. We will probably take some tours to check out the ruins around Cuzco before we take the train up to the Sacred Valley for one night stay and hopefully some river rafting. Then we hop back onto the train to go the res of the way up to Machu Picchu where we will have a couple days to check out the sacred city ruins and the natural hot springs. We then come back down all the way to Cuzco for a night and fly back to Lima early the next morning. That will give us the day to site see in Lima before we get back on the plane late that night back to the states.
So, I haven't been able to find anything in Lima for Land Cruisers online yet so if any of you know of anything from your past internet searches let me know.
And if any of you have been to Cuzco and have some advice please share.

Sorry can't offer any help but sounds like an awesome trip. Have fun!

Wow, sounds like a cool trip.

Any specific reason for going there?

No, not really. My GF is the traveling one and has been to Europe twice, Costa Rica, & All over Mexico. Myself I have been to many places in the US and once to British Columbia. So it's time for me to get a passport and put some stamps in it. I guess we came up with Peru because we wanted to go to South America and when I say we I mean her. We started reading about places and she knows that if I go to Brazil that I won't come back (Beautiful Women). Then we read about the Inti Rama festival and it was right around the time that we wanted to travel so that ended our search.

bluetribal,

Sounds like a lot of fun. My girl and I were there 1.5 years ago.....Hit me up with an email and let me know what kind of questions you have. I recommend reading a book called "Peru The Rough Guide" Sounds like you are pretty clued in as to what you want to do. You must do the Sacred Valley, spend at least 3 days in Cuzco, there are tons of ruins and fun restaurants and bars and things going on....Stay at a hostel, DON"T BOOK ANYTHING AT THE AIRPORT. Book your tours once you get there....plenty of services in Cuzco. Do the river rafting, we did and it was a lot of fun.....Great way to see the ruins along the sacred valley, and majestic views of 18K ft. plus snow capped mountains....

my wife is from peru & we go back every other year.
we will be there in july for almost a month. Going to islas ballestas (mini galapagos) then to the nasca lines (big desert drawings you can only see from the air) then to the family farm for some wine they produce (outside of arequipa...a duners paradise) then off to cusco for a week before coming home.
I will have to look around for any land cruisers....lots of old land rovers with pto's on farms and such.
You will have a great trip and make sure you have a chicken & french fries dish called pollo a la braza...and if you are up to it try cuy (taste like rabbit).
enjoy

Yeah, we are spending one night and roughly two days in the Sacred Valley before we go up to Machu Picchu, so hopefully we will have enough time to raft. And yeah, we are staying 4 or 5 of the nights in Cuzco and plan to do some tours out of there or even travel out on our own, hopefully in a Land Cruiser! :grinpimp:

DON"T BOOK ANYTHING AT THE AIRPORT. Book your tours once you get there....plenty of services in Cuzco.

Thanks for the tip and the only thing we plan to book ahead of time is our train tickets since we have to make the train the days we want because of our hotel bookings in the Sacred Valley and Aguas Caliente. Plus it is going to be a busy time in Cuzco the week we are there so we will try to book anything else the first day we get there.

Lucky ;p

Thanks for the food tip....

...and if you are up to it try cuy (taste like rabbit).

So if it taste like rabit what is it? By the way do you think it is common for people to know what rabit taste like? :D

cuy is guinea pig, best served grilled flat like road kill...taste great and if you find the ear bone & drop it in your beer drink it down for good look (tiny speck of a think)..
on the rabbit thing....well it ain't quite like chicken since that doesn't really have a taste and it isn't gamey(sp?) like other animals :)
The fun thing is many rural small places have a pen that you can pick your cuy just like a lobster tank :)
Also the fresh breads and emanadas (bread pies with different things inside) are great, every morning go for a walk and get fresh bread!
Pisco is a local white/clear whiskey that is really good.....and lastly you can try the cocoa leaves or tea if the altitude gives you trouble. I am ok to 15000ft plus but my older soon needed something around 14500 to help him out. Carry the cocoa leaves in a baggie and hand some to a local in the mountains...it is a traditional "shared a plug of tobacco in the south or west USA" kind of thing.
Great local wines in Peru, hundreds of potatos you have never seen (the incas had over 1000) and other fruits and veggies to amaze you.
Rice is a big part of the diet since the large asian immigration years ago however if you are a big coffee fan you are in trouble since instant is the norm.
Have a great trip and post a report upon your return.

who takes habano cigars with him since peruvian tobacco sucks

Yeah, my GF clued me in on the Guinea pig thing since she has been reading the book. Couldn't eat lobster at Porto Nuevo when they showed it to me cut in half so doubt I will be able to pick my own out.
Thanks for the tip on breads and passing along a baggie of Cocoal leaves.
And I most definately will be posting a report!!!

I forgot one thing, Altitude sickness. The first time I was there (been there twice) I got really drowsy the first day, which pretty much killed my energy and alertness to enjoy the day tour of Cuzco. The second trip I was fine, but my wife was worked. Drink the Coca Mate as a remedy for altitude sickness, it helps your respiratory system. I hope it does not happen to you, or your GF, if it does, not much you can do but take it easy, as it will get much better the next day, hence a lot of people add an extra day around Cuzco just for that reason: to acclimate to the high altitude of the town (Machu Pichu is actually at a lower altitude than Cuzco)

Really, I didn't realize that Machu Picchu was lower in elevation.

Yeah, we should have pleanty of time to aclimate since we are getting there Sat and staying till' the Inti Rama festival on Monday before heading to the Sacred Valley. I am most worried about asltitude sickness with my GF and her brother since they are both asmatic (SP?).

So I got an e-mail from Cusco 4x4 and it is $125 per day with basic insurance and 300KM included per day. Or $100 per day for a Toyota Hi Luxs. What is an Hi and I assume Lexus?

And it looks like it is only $27 to go river rafting for the day so that looks like it will be a killer deal. Time to buy a water proof case for my digital camera! Ehh maybe just a water proof disposable will be smarter!

IIRC: Hi-Lux = Pick-up. I believe there is a Hi-Lux "Surf" which is a 4Runner. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.
