a pair of wheel bearings(one for each side), pair of seals(one each side), at least new brake shoes on the leakie side, but both sides would be best.

only the leakie side needs attention now, but where there is smoke, there is normally fire so...

the bearing needs pressed on and off the axle fyi.

There are actually *3* seals on each side. There's a big O-ring on the face of the flange, then a regular seal just inside the end of the housing. Once you press off the bearing, there's another seal behind it. That's usually the one that is leaking. You can order all the parts from Marlin, he has a nice upgraded seal for the axle tube:

You need a jig and a press to get the retainer and bearing off. I made my jig from an old axle housing.

Why not just put new seals in it? Are the bearings bad?

To do the bearings...he's gonna need a press and bearing seperators and so forth. He could do the seals with hand tools, clean the brakes up..and be down the road.
