Just got back from a hike up Surprise Cyn into Panamint City Ghost Town. I've been wanting to make this hike for a long time. Just never really been in shape to do it. Well, fret no longer.. i made a date and accomplished it whether i was ready or not. I will go ahead and pat myself on the back since #1, i don't hike hardly at all. and #2 i've never even worn a pack. Basically this was my virgin multi-day hike. Im so stoked to have made it and now im hooked and want to hike to more remote destinations. Really gives you a sense of accomplishment that you can only understand when you don't drive right up to the location.

Anyhow, here's the trip report.. enjoy.. i know i did. :wings:

The Adventure Duo: Panamint City Exploration

Yeah its neat and we only scratched the surface of stuff to see up there. It's 5 hard miles to the top, but the way the trail goes, probably more like 7. And it's up hill the whole way. I'd say the whole weekend was about 18 miles or there abouts of hiking.

Hey Dave. Good to see you guys the other day! I watched the video of your hike it was great and it brought back some good memories of the area.

Dave-

Awesome report and photos! You're a funny guy..."Time Machine Hot Tub", loved that! :)

Tried to PM you but it's full, so for what it's worth I wanted to point out that it's possible the pretty green mossy area you noted as the "Grado" may be the "Grotto". Grotto is Italian for cave and is often used to describe cool damp dark areas that have natural overhangs, etc.

Sweet report, thanks again.

YOU did 18 miles of hiking?? Is this the same guy that turned back hiking to the upper waterfall at Sheep Canyon last year? :flipoff2:

hahahha yep, same guy Brent! Maybe a hair more in better shape. Have a ton more to go, but im happy just heading in that direction so i can accomplish more adventures! Whitney anyone? :D

Scott, yes! Gratto and Grado! I've seen it spelled both ways. I don't know, i figured i'd just leave it.

Mark, dude there's more cool stuff than you know brother.. just stop a minute to look around.

Thanks for reading you guys.

Right on, I wouldn't have brought it up but since you have become more of a "professional" outdoorsman, you know sponsors and all. :D

Curious how you filled the tub?

Great write up- Looks like you guys had a great time
Have some friends who have done a traverse going up Suprise canyon and then down to Hungry Bills ranch on the DV side.

Scott, changed it ... it started to linger in the back of my mind. That's what separates my blog from anyone elses, bad grammar, A's and An's and bad spelling :D It's personal that way.

There's a spring up the hill from the cabin. There's pvc plumbing (which we repaired) that comes down into the cabin. From there it splits and there's actually enough pressure to use a hose. We filled it from the spring. Then started a fire under it.

Tim, that's awesome man. Much to see up there. I want to hike to Telescope Peak someday.

Very nice write up. I wish I would have spent more time documenting trips I have made. Love to get to this area but not sure of the water potential all year or in dry years. I certainly don't like the idea of carting up 20 lbs of water.

Thanks for sharing your trip, makes me want to break out my gear again and get back to packing this summer in the eastern sierras.
