Anybody ever paint hard wood floors? I am going to paint my bedroom and my hardwood floors are in desperate need of attention. Can I sand them and paint them to change the colour? How do I seal it so that the paint doesnt wear off?

I gotta tell ya, I wouldn't recommend it. In my old house I did the floor paint and no matter what I did (I had to do it twice) it cracked and peeled. I tried the water based floor and porch paint and the oil based enamel. The enamel held up much better, but still ended up chipping if you put furniture on it.
I just think it's worth it to sand them and refinish them with stain and poly.

we had painted wood floors back in Germany - the paint always cracked off, and this was even with the toxic stuff from the 50/60s (which used to stick much better). Based on that experience, I would not recommend painting.
refinishing can be done with various methods, polyurethane, wax, and oil based sealers (we had our's redone in the late 70s, so I am no help on modern products)

I will go the route of just refinish and reseal then 
That's definitely the lower maintenance option and best looking.
There are a bunch of water based coatings on the market for re-sealing, much better for the environment and you.

Stinky there is something called a "pickle" stain which has more of a whitewash "Americana" look to it. I did it to a butcher block we had plumbed for a bathroom counter. I little bit of a waxy feel to it though. Try it on some extra timber and see if you like the finish.

The most important thing about putting poly on floors is to be sure you don't have any bubbles and to sand between coats...usually with steel wool. I just refinished my floors last year and I love the glossy look of all the poly...

Stinky, painted floors can have all sorts of outcomes. If you don't do proper prep, or don't use proper materials, you won't get desired results. Unless you use some sort of polyurethane based paint or something specifically for floors, it will wear quickly.
If you sand down to wood, use proper materials, it will come out okay. Think of basketball courts--how long does that paint hold up?
You could also experiment with applying polyurethane OVER the paint.
If you have some scrap flooring, you could experiment with a few different approaches and see what works best. I know Stinky is all about experimenting.

It does peel, crack, all of the above. However, it is also a cheap and easy solution. If you don't mind redoing it every year, go for it. My wife painted our Kitchen floor, and she just has to redo it every other year.
Sand them god damn things and stain them black or baby jesus will strike you down Samuel L. Jackson style.

If you ever paint them it will be 1000000 x's the trouble to get it off and make them wood color again... paint is going to decrease the value of the house. New stain and clear top coat will add value... want blue - get a rug and put it next to the bed!
