Hey, I'm looking into getting my '97 40th Anniversary Edition painted...

Anyone know how to get that plastic trim BS off the doors? Are there fasteners that will leave holes?

I think I've seen other 80s that have been painted that don't appear to have that trim on there anymore.

Any other tips/advice for getting it painted? I'm a noob.

If you’re talking about the molding along the doors and front and rear fender/quarter panel, then those are held on by adhesive.

Those are the ones. I'm thinking it'll better without as opposed to painting over them. Any arguments against?

As far as I know, they are no longer available to purchase. You can still find the ones that say “4wheel drive” on it but that isn’t OG to the 40th

@MrLucky : might help to post up a photo of your 80 and the molding.

Not the fender flares, I'm talking about that plastic strip that runs down the middle of both doors and extends onto front and rear quarter panels
I’d take them if you are going to toss um

If anyone with a similar question finds this thread, the door trim pieces are held on with fasteners and there are holes in the door skin. Lots of them.

My local toyota dealer does sell those trim pieces but they are like $235 a piece and there are 4 of them. AND they don't sell the little pieces in the rear that have the signal light in them.

Long story short, it's cheaper for me to have the body shop weld and paint than to replace them

ajax1 - I asked the shop to save the pieces, so if they survive, I'll send them to you if you want to pay for shipping. I'm in California.

The holes are a little hard to see in that pic. Also, there are actually 4 pieces on each side. I think it's like $1500 from the dealer for 6 of them, the rearmost ones being unavailable - from Toyota anyway. At least, that's what I'm told. YMMV.

Oh, and BTW a not-insignificant amount of rust was discovered under the corners of the windshield. It required a little sheet metal repair.
