Guys/Gals,

There is a LX450 in Northside Lexus dealership in Houston, TX that I'm interested in.
I won't buy it before I drive it and look at it, but I live in Kansas City
and getting to Houston just for the fun of drive/flight... ain't that funny.
So I'm looking for someone that could do a preliminary check on the truck, __please__.
From pictures/discriptions it looks OK.
Apparently there are some stone chips on the windshield, but not too bad.
My main concern is drive train.
How it starts?
How tranny shifts?
Does it smoke?
Does it make any funny noises?
Does it leak?
Any signs of the head gasket problem?

If anybody would rise to the task the truck is gold/beige 1997 Lexus LX450 located at:
Northside Lexus
17925 North Freeway
Houston, TX 77090

... and I would be very gratefull too :D

Just a quick thought, Lexus can give you a print out of all the service done at any lexus dealer why not get a printout an that will give you some more info to work off of.....

Good luck... BTW does it have lockers and whats the mileage???

I tried to do it via phone with them and only few meaningless records poped-out.
I will give it a try here locally.

Thanks.
It's 88K and has lockers.

Long as it was garaged it should be pristine... at 88k I would worry more about the paint and underside than anything.... the sun and rain in houston will do a job on paint if it was parked outside... and if its from galveston the salt off the beach would be bad.. but at 88k they are just getting broke in....

Might try posting the in the Club section. There are two clubs in Houston. Lone Star has a chapter and the then club that has Texas in the name.

Just saw this....

I have a meeting near downtown 1400 - 1600. I could try to make my way to the northside for a look either on the way out or back.

I did take a quick look at their inventory and they are showing a zero for the LX-450 inventory. Might want to double check the status.

I'm running out the door right now on another errand. I'll check back in around 1000.

I would appreciate if you could take a look at it.
It's an ebay item, so they don't list it in the inventory.

Thanks for the hints.
It seems that the truck was in Houston area for the past 5 years.

Just looked at all the LX-450s on ebay and did not see one in Houston.

Can you provide a link?

The only things I saw were the dual exhaust (?) and the "LX-450" badge is missing from the bottom part of the upper lid, center.

Everything else looked normal from the pics.

My wife (25 days post neck surgery) has thrown a bit of a curve at me today, but I still think I can go look at it later today, most likely now it would be after my meeting, not before.

I apreciate any help in that matter!
I asked about the double exhaust yesterday on the board...

I spent about 30 minutes looking the vehicle over and I took it for a 5 mile run up I-45. Here are my notes:

Heater hose at control valve seeping coolant (crusty). All heater hoses appear original.

Oil somewhat dirty and baffle under filler cap quite dirty and varnished.

Front of engine dry - PS does not appear to be leaking.

Alt belts slightly loose.

Toyota red in system. Engine was hot when I arrived, so I was not able to open rad to check for sludge. Overflow was at proper level and looked ok.

Knuckles are not leaking gear oil. Just the usual layer of grime. Grease appears to be moly by color (did not taste!).

Driveshafts look dry, but there wasn't any driveline clunk at stop. Zerks do not appear to have been cleaned/shot in awhile (slip yokes and u-joints). FWIW mine were the same way when I bought my truck and they are going strong at 154k...I grease them now every 5,000).

Pan arch seal leaking (typical) as the bellhousing is grimed up. Oil is spraying with the wind onto the at pan (typical).

LX-450 emblem removed from rear hatch. The paint on the top hatch looks too perfect to be original...but I can still see a witness mark from where the emblem was. If it was repaired/repainted, it was a very subtle and good job.

Small dent/impression on DS above & behind fuel door. Paint ok

4 or 5 minor dings in DS rear door, paint ok

1 minor ding in DS front door, paint ok.

Driver side bumper wing scraped & poorly touched up (1/2" x 4")

Typical rock chips on bumper and body cladding. Most but not all touched up. One chip on PS rear flare the size of small finger nail un-covered.

Several repaired small stone chips on hood do not match factory paint (truck is silver and touch up had a blue cast to it...remember I am color deficient!!!)

A few brush type scratches along PS...these are in the clearcoat and could probably be buffed out.

Small ding in PS rear door, paint ok

Scuff on PS front flare, 4 scuffs parallel to one another about an inch long (abrasions more than scratches...might buff out, may need touch up)

Paint cracked on upper side of PS bumper wing...3 or 4 cracks parallel to one another about 2" long.

A few light scratches on roof - again, like brush scratches in the clearcoat.

Leather in front and center and on steering wheel very good for 9 year old truck (better than mine).

Third row has some cuts in it...the worst is visible in the pics on ebay - ~4" slit in front of ds seat...looks like it is through the leather, but not quite through the backing. Several other several inch long similar slits on the third row.

No c-pillar cracks visible.

Tool kit and jack intact.

Glass good.

Dual exhaust is fake. DS pipe is all show, no go!

DS rear door ash tray door spring broken, does not snap shut, just drops by gravity.

Headliner is kina dirty/stained...should clean up ok.

Moisture in PS headlight fixture.

Power antenna works.

Moon roof ok.

Lockers work great, they locked right up...faster than mine!

Rear washer diverter valve is shot. Water sprays on windshield when you try to wash the back (this is not unusual)

I noticed a slight pull (very slight) to the right on a couple of hard stops, but not all. Might have been the crown. In general, tracked nice and straight, felt tight.

Radio ok

Tires - Michelin LTX ~50% remaining.

Windshield may have been replaced at some point. There was some black sealant goop at the PS lower corner

Minor hood flutter at front DS at 70+mph. May need adjustment.

A/C may need charge - not as cold as mine. Could be dirty fins on condenser.

Did not see any external evidence on block of coolant leakage. Did not do bubble test as I was alone.

A few final thoughts to come....

edit: There was very little rust on the underside...just a bit on the frame near the front that I noticed.

In general this is a very nice truck. It is not perfect...it is 9 years old! 9 years of parking lots and stones have left a few scars, but none of them are significant.

The truck drives fine. There are no obvious major issues. If I were to buy the truck I would do all the same things I did to my then 116k mile truck - complete baselining of all fluids, front and rear axle service, hoses, belts, starter contacts, PHH, brake fluid, PS fluid, etc. A thorough interior and engine bay detailing would also be on my list of must do's. Truthfully, I'd do all these things to most any 9 year old Cruiser unless I knew they had been done recently by a competent PO/mechanic.

Have you received the print out of the maintenance from Lexus yet?

Feel free to call me if you want to talk: 281-861-8231 (home) 281-743-0139 (cell)

I did pull out the records, but not much has been done in Lexus service stations.

Thanks again

If you decide to buy it, let me know when you fly in. If my schedule will allow I will try to make myself available to pick you up and take you to the dealer.

You want to fly in to Bush Intercontinental if possible. It is only 12 miles from the dealer and on the north end of town (closer to Kansas!).

Tim

tarbe, you make "Houston Proud".

If I ever move back, Ill know there are some cool Cruiserheads in the area. :)
