Man that’s the best thing to me is the visibility. Absolutely nothing at all like an FJCruiser

thats why I asked

I havent seen one up front yet and I couldnt imagine them making that same mistake again

Placed a deposit on a 1958 in Meteor Shower about 3 weeks ago, took delivery on Saturday. Drove great on the drive home from the dealership and excelled in navigating through the Chick Fil A parking lot. I'm putting a set of BFG KO3s on tomorrow, super excited!

Had a friend wave off the purchase list the other day after driving one

His complaint was blind spot related and he said it felt nearly as bad as an FJ Cruiser

Any of you new owners have any feedback on how visibility to the right rear is?

I know these vehicles have detectors for vehicles on sides and the lexus even has cameras but......
Toyota has 360 cameras as well.

It's glass all the way around. I'm not saying your friend is wrong, but I've yet to encounter that issue. Reminds me of driving my 97 Jeep Cherokee around. Between all the sensors and the amount of windows I've had no problem

Random questions for 250 owners. I considered a new thread, but I think this stuff fits here ok.
  • When using Apple Car Play (or AA), do the camera views (MTM, etc.) still pop up on the display?
  • If the rear glass is open, will it let you open the rear hatch? Specifically thinking of the power rear gate. (not responsible for damage if someone tries this and it goes bad 😬)
  • Does the 250 have an aluminum hood? There was info a while ago that said the GX had an aluminum hood, but I forgot to check the 250 when looking in person.
Camera views pop up when using AA.

Hatch wont open if glass is open.

Hood is aluminum.

We are on the final return leg of our West Coast road trip with the GX. We will have covered a little over 3K miles in the trip and the GX will be @ 4K miles when we get home.

Plus’s - great cargo room. On the northbound portion we had 5 people + luggage and all the luggage fit well and the kids worked out who had to sit in the middle. I would not want to sit in the middle, but they didn’t complain too much. Power is really good both in quantity and quality. With the turbo’s and intercooler the performance was still great crossing through 4,000ft passes @ 95F. Transmission does a good job of being in the right gear pretty consistently. Below 65MPH it is very quiet. I really like the seat massage. I had very low expectations here so this was a great surprise.

The OK/Good - Once the freeway speeds hit 75-85 MPH the truck is definitely noisier. Not horrible, but noticeable. Not unexpected when pushing a 6’ tall box through the air at higher speeds. Seat comfort was good, but I keep playing with the adjustments as I haven’t quite nailed my preference yet. I was ready for and anticipated dismal fuel economy. This trip has had freeways, coastal highways and a number of large cities (and their traffic). I’ve validated the fuel calculations are basically spot on and I’m at ~17MPG overall on this trip. We did get 19.1MPG on the leg from Portland to Orland, CA yesterday. Yesterday’s speeds were generally lower @ 70-75MPH so I’m going to believe that if you could keep your foot out of it you may see 20MPG. I won’t see it, but someone might.

The not so good. The Mark Levinson stereo is very disappointing. Ok, it sucks. I have played multiple times with equalization in Spotify and then made more adjustments with basic tone controls. It’s ok for music. For phone calls the sound is weak and thin and shrill. It is not worth it. Once more people have them and make feedback on speakers I’ll take a serious look at an upgraded subwoofer and changing out the mid’s / tweeters to tame the harshness.

I’m looking forward to hitting the local forest service roads soon.

I have a GX Overtrail and am working with an upholstery guy to tap a couple of cavities behind interior panels to create storage compartments. He remarked on the lack of padding/soundproofing on the sheet metal. I think this helps explain the noisiness of the truck at higher speeds. It's something I notice as well. It's not terrible but not in the same league as my prior Land Cruiser 200.

It's a shame Lexus didn't add a little more padding, because adding it after purchase would be a 15K job involving pulling the whole interior apart. If the padding had been added during assembly, it would have just been a small additional cost. But I guess in that case, people would be complaining about the truck costing $500 more or what not.

  • The camera views are relatively 'aggressive'. If you're backing up and need the display, it shows
  • You can activate the rear hatch with the window open. Idid it accidentally, but no override on the functionality. As you said, be careful!
  • Don't know for sure, but the hood does not appear to be aluminum. I haven't had a new car in a few years, but the entire metalwork feels different than the steel in my 2006 LC or 2007 FJ.

Thanks @turbo8 and @MileHiM5

Is the hatch/glass thing possibly a difference between 1958 and LC/FE (power gate vs manual)?

I'm going to go with the hood being aluminum. ;) The only reason I care here is for how much PPF I would want to put on the hood.

I guess I didn't look to closely at the hood, all I did was try and stick a magnet to it. The magnet didn't stick to the hood like it did on the doors and fenders.

My LC power hatch wouldn't move with the glass open, it would just beep.

On to my 2nd week of ownership of this OT+

I’ve put about 400 miles on it mixed hwy and city driving, I’ve driven it quite spirited at times and had it up to about 95 mph.

I just added these 285/75R18 Yoko X-AT. They certainly fill out the fenders much better than the 33’s. I haven’t noticed any rub in city driving but anticipate I’ll need a little trimming up front for full stuff.

I’ve noticed very little hood flutter as many have discussed at HWY. I have seen it but also have seen it flatten back out quickly depending on speed and cross wind. Road noise has been minimal but I’ve been driving a 120 on 37” mud tires so it’s not a fair comparison to my previous daily…

I do think the ML is weak compared to previous generations but is still far better than the JBL in my 23’ TRD Sequoia. It was too big for my needs and would never fit in the tight wooded areas of the SE, so I traded for this 550.

Milage with heavy foot has been just under 15 with mix use and did drop slightly with the new tires but I’ll be curious once I adjust for the larger tire.

Added ceramic tint and ceramic paint protection via ExMark and am extremely happy with those mods, seat jackers are next and combined with the adjustable bolster this thing is going to eat up some highway. I’ll be waiting to see how the aftermarket integrates with suspension and armor, and keeping all the tech happy.

Have my eye on this tire size myself! Please do share more as you get more learnings. My main concern for myself is I like to do high-speed trails where I can bottom out, so I'm looking for info about clearance issues at full compression before I invest in the tire.

I think your mileage will improve. I'm pretty sure I gained a couple mpg after breaking things in.

Any thoughts on installing a drawer system or sleeping platform over the battery in the cargo area. How often do you need access to the battery?

You should check out @Air Down Gear Up ! They recently created a system for Dissent Off-Road’s 250 and they’re actually creating & installing a system in my GX550 right now (will be completed this week!).

Please keep us posted on the 550 setup.

crazy that y'all are discussing seat massagers, screen software, high end audio disapointments, and flashing nanny lights on a Land Cruiser. Doens't sound very land cruiser-y to me.

I second Air Down Gear Up. I won't be installing any drawers in my GX, but I had their system in my 200 and it held up great through a few years of abuse. Plus, they are great guys to work with.

I had a rabbit trail last night. I know in a lot of reviews, they're knocking the LC 250 for having a ground clearance of 8.7in. When I looked at the stock clearance for my FJ60/62, it was 8.1in from the factory and a lot of owners swap to 31/33in tires with probably mitigates that a lot.

Shouldn't the LC 250 also benefit a lot from just a tire swap? Has anyone measured their clearance gains from just a tire swap alone? Granted, this is likely to become a moot point once 37-40in tires are added to the equation.

Going from 1958 stock tires (245/70R18) to 275/70R18 KO3s added 7/8" for me.

What are people doing for onboard air in the Land Cruiser? I'd like to permanently mount an ARB somewhere, but not sure where that would be. In the interim, is there a compressor that can plug into the inverter?

Follow @Dissent on insta I think their 250 has air. VIAIR has a portable compressor that may suit your needs well.
