Nice - just like Christmas all over again! Looks like 4wd systems are using Belton suspension gear. Can you take heaps of photos of the tank install. Thanks!

The tank cost 750 AUD - about 480 USD today. Shipping and tax are extra - but as I ordered a whole load of other stuff it worked out better.

Fuel tank is 195 litres which is 42.9 UK gallons or 51.2 little US gallons...

So I learned a new word today.

chuffed–adjective British Informal. delighted; pleased; satisfied.

I'm going to start using it.

I didn't realise that "chuffed" is only used in Britain..I can't say I use it that much - think its a bit out-dated really.

G'day Gwynley,

The water separator or 'sedimenter' is a handy little gadget, as BC40 correctly points out. I'm never sure if the sensor light on my dash is working so during routine services I drain half a cup or so of diesel out of it just a precautionary measure.

If you have had no experience with diesel's previously, you will need to learn how to 'bleed' the fuel system after you have changed the fuel filter or run out of fuel. Similar to bleeding brakes so you'll need a bit of fuel in a jar and a length of rubber tubing. The easiest place to get the fuel from is the water separator.

Cheers,

Ben

P.S. Snow hey.........for what it's worth the temperature has been hovering around 44 degrees (112F) for the last week in most of southern Australia and it's as dry as a dead dingos donga!!.

Hello Ben - that's a useful tip using the water strainer to get the diesel when bleeding the system. I did change the filter on it a while ago and found the actual bleeding very easy on my 2H.

Do you know of a way to test the water strainer? Should it have a certain amount of resistance between poles?

It is really cool to see folks doing this sort of thing. While driving over rocks and small cars makes for good pictures, I find it even more amazing that people believe so much in their cruisers that they decide to go across a continent.
I can only dream at this point of doing that.
Hope your trip goes well.

Hi Gwynley, I am so envious of you doing that trip, shame I didn’t find this site last year or I might have said, “Why not take 2 Land Cruiser 60’s”

Interesting to watch you get her ready, not much time left before you’re off date.

Are you going through Dover? If you are I will come and wave you off in my 60.

Malcolm

There is lots to prepare for this trip - getting the 'cruiser sorted is really just the half of it! But I have confidence in the cruiser - especially seeing what everybody else does on this forum. TBH my previous experiences of travelling in Africa and the US has often shown there is as much wilderness is the US as there is in Africa... But there will be other issues to content with!

I'm working on more sponsorship so it looks like the off date is going be put back a bit. I don't want to travel through Europe / North Africa / Sahara in June / July / August (too hot!) so it may be put back as far as September. I want to be as prepared as possible and its not as if I am going to do it all again soon - so delays don't bother me!

Malcolm - deffo up for the meet, perhaps we could do some greenlaneing or something if you fancy over the summer?

Gwyn

I'm based in Central London - near Lords cricket ground at the moment.. Landcruiser is on Anglesey North Wales though for the rebuild. (Didn't fancy paying £100 a week for a garage in central London...)

Up in Wales again this week, will mostly be working on the axles - got all my parts from the Toyota dealer (Jemca in London) who are helping out with parts.

Here are all the bags...

Dude this thread rocks. Its like christmas for a cruiser geek!

Thanks!

Yes it has been like Christmas, I think all the parcels I have opened for this are probably more than all the parcels I have opened in all my christmas' put together!

Landcruiser is currently looking like this;

Sadly the wheels are not connect to anything! as I'm rebuilding the axles...

Ok so what I have been up today;

Started by removing the drums - easy peasy

Removed the diff cover

and then unbolted the guide pin and took out the mini cogs pushed the axles in a removed the pins.

I then removed the differential;

Now with all the brakes taken out;

and you can see the seal and bearing. They actually seem to be in reasonable condition after 146,000miles no marks at all. However we are going to be driving across the Sahara desert and the last thing I want to be doing in 40c Sudan is replacing a bearing / seal - hence why I am doing them now.

Took out the seal and the innards of the bearing (carefully with a screw driver not scratching the surface)

To remove the bearing most manuals tell you to use a slide hammer, I don't have one and from reading around on this forum it seems easiest just to wack them out - so here is my technique.

I made up a little "pusher" with a bit of old exhaust and some bolts

then with a long rod of metal I used a sledge hammer to force the bearing out;

I then cleaned a wired the whole axle up.

Then painted with some Bilt Hamber Hydrate 80 Bilt-Hamber Laboratories - Corrosion Prevention: Hydrate 80 . This stuff is cool, paint it on sky blue and then it turns the rust black.

After letting the Hydrate 80 to dry I sprayed it with some good old Hammerite Hammerite UK - Metal Paint

and there it is left to dry overnight..

Some nice stuff going on there. I would definitely love to see what the end results are of this. Seems like you're spending more on the truck than you are actually having bought the truck. How much has this all run you so far?

Hmmm that's a big question! Landcruiser cost me £1400 (just over $2000USD today) 2nd hand cars are pretty cheap in the UK as we have an obsession with new ones... I think I have spent around £3500 (Just over $5000USD) so far but as we are doing the trip for charity I have been pretty successful at getting cheap / free parts. I only paid a token amount for the parts from Toyota as one of the London dealerships is supporting us. I have been pleasantly surprised about how much people are still willing to give, even in the current economic "crisis".

I always knew that I would spend more on parts than the actual vehicle - there would be difficult to buy something "off the shelf" in the UK that would be suitable for my trip. I am also finding the whole process of sourcing parts and deciding exactly which solutions to be fun!

I plan to put some costs up on my website when we are ready to leave in September...
