I now have everything stripped including alternator and water bypass housing. Its time to pull the head off. I will do that tomorrow. I did take some pics of my gunk-ed up intake valves.

Here are some pics. All my valves are the same.

I have a feeling that my behemoth of an engine will topple that flimsy engine holding device.

I cannot believe how heavy this thing is! Poor truck, no wonder it's slow!

Good luck, mind to zero and continue zen, I will now go for a drive in mine just because I can

Progress. Block and head look real good.

Cleaned out good. Just scraped off the gasket. Revealed good metal below.

I'm going to go into the head real good. I think 3 of my precups are cracked.

Ok so I have made a little more progress. I took off the oil pan. I am pleased to see that the pan is relatively clean and gunk free inside. The internals are gigantic by any engine standard. I'm impressed with that as well. I also was extremely surprised as to how easy it was to pull the crankshaft pulley. Used a 3' breaker bar for the nut and then used a typ. puller for the pulley. Valves cleaned out nice. A couple of them are pitted a bit but I think they're ok to be reused. I will put the head in solvent tomorrow to get it thoroughly cleaned and painted. Then reassembly. All my precups are cracked. Must get some of those as well. Some pictures below.

Clean vs dirty. The valves cleaned nicely.

Ok so I made more progress, cleaned and painted the oil pan. I pulled the conrods and pistons and found that the bearings and crank are in real good condition. Now how do I clean the Pistons without damaging them? Also I need to pull the timing gear and the idlers so that I may replace the beb's.

I wanted to use gasoline, as it seems to be very good at cleaning. Thanks for the tip. Will use diesel

Nothing wrong with gasoline either. Diesel is bit more oily and doesn't vaporize like gas does.
Leave the parts in diesel/gas for overnight, then brush with teeth brush or similar.
Should come out clean.

Pistons after first round of cleaning. Oven cleaner easy off worked best.

I have a question for those in the know. I kind of have a feeling how to do this but I'm asking anyway. I want to take off the timing gears so that i may pull the timing case off in order to get the crankshaft out. The manual does not specify procedure for dismantle other than remove the gears etc. It does however tell us how to put everything back together. My question is, when i pull everything off, if the engine is not at 1 tdc, won't the injection pump be out of time when i put everything back together, even if i follow the install procedure per manual? I guess what I'm saying is I have been spinning the crank to get the marks to line up prior to removal to make sure the injection pump is in sync but they just wont. Should I just take everything off no matter what and just install per manual? I mean the gears are keyed and such but I still think imo that everything should be lined up in order for the pump to be on time when everything is back together. Please, those who are in the know, do chime in. Thanks.

Alright, so I made a bit more progress. I've pulled the timing gears and cam and then pulled the rear main seal and crank. No damage anywhere and everything looks clean. I have finally managed to clean the timing cover and paint it. I also cleaned the Pistons real well one more time and the ring grooves. I was in for an unpleasant surprise! Looks like one of my conrods is bent. What the French? I see no damage in the cylinder or on the piston itself. Anyway, letting pictures speak for themselves.

Can U spot the bent rod above?
Also got a new rev counter in and u can also see a couple pics of the bare block.

I also wanted to show how grimy this beast is. For instance, check out that h55 and t-case. Need to scrape that real good. Note the rear main resting on the shifter neck.
