Hope to see Tonto in more adventures in the future. Have to travel lighter in a 40👍

The dust in the cab is awesome. Just today, I returned to pavement, and decided to flip the kick vent, at about 40mph, face full of soil. I think some of that rubbing noise is the rollbar on the tub as the tube adjusts on the flexing frame. Trails are far easier to ride out with 3-point belts, got mine from CCOT.

Yes, a "little red truck" was a tan '85 pickup for a SOA 40-head I knew, "sleeper" rigs.

What is your air-down-psi?

Haha, there's nothing quite like cleaning out the vents and interior after some offroading. On purpose and often by accident. We need to rebuild the doors so the windows and interior mechanism don't bang around so much. We change the psi depending, but this trail is mostly granite and grippy so I think I put them to about 20 or something. Just a softer ride, but keeping most of the ground clearance.

Tonto sure is a bouncy ride but you drive it like a pro Tim. Softer springs and maybe some Bilsteins would definitely help absorb some of those bumps. Good to see your 40 back in action! 👍

Thanks Kevin. I was wondering if some 5100's would control movement a bit better. Maybe one day Terrain Tamer will come out with their parabolics. After playing with a 60 series with them Tunisia I'm a fan.

The 7 year old OME's do okay, but maybe some Bil's with them will help control the "slightly" faster corrugations.

If the budget allows - perhaps the Dobinsons IMS shocks are worth considering. The 62 with the "heavy" Dobinsons kit & IMS shocks feels as smooth as the IFS 4runner w the ICON coilovers, not kidding. I was a bit surprised actually. That was one of my concerns going to the leaf-spring truck... it's a nonissue now. You'll have to take it for a spin.

After the Maltec having Dobinsons I'm definitely a fan. We were always shocked at how the HDJ with small tires road better offroad than ol Goose with the 35's and fancy Icon adjustable shocks.
Those IMS ones with more oil volume seem like a good buy. I don't want to bother with new springs, but if we could I'd maybe throw on the Dobinson leafs as well. I think we need to do an old truck run this month or next at the latest.

Do you ever take the wrong trail, and after you get back on track, you find that your tires have all these little white whiskers from the shorter cactus on the ground?

While searching for an FJ40 a member here passed along a link to your write up. Really enjoyed reading through this. You guys do a great job of documenting your travels. Even more motivated now to add a 40 to our family. Nice work! Thanks for sharing!
Thank you!

Haha. Yes, but it's only a bad day when I forget and then later we're washing the truck and run a hand over the tire with a rag and suddenly feel a sharp pain.
