Hello -

I'm new here ... first post.

I recently purchased a 1985 HJ60 in really nice condition that I plan to fully restore. I am new Land Cruisers so I'm not sure how to identify what options (colors) were original equipment?

A good example is the wheels. They are painted steel wheels but what was the original color, did they have hub covers, did they have (what looks like) lug covers?

The tuck has a PTO winch, winch bumper with two chrome "poles" that look like they are there to identify the front of the bumper ... are those stock? Did all trucks with a PTO come with the silver cover?

I'm an old Mopar guy so I am used to the descriptive fender tag and build sheet under the rear seat ... my main question is did Toyota have anything like that?

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide

Pics man... how do we know you even have a Land Cruiser if you don't post pics. We need a picture of you, with your cruiser holding the current front page of a major newspaper (USA Today, NY Time, WSJ, Etc..). Then we'll answer any questions you have and tell you what's bogus on your rig and what's not. Keep that PTO winch though. I've been seeing those sell for crazy amounts of money recently.

Ok, that's your only freebie until we get pics.

Note to self ... always provide pics when asking questions ...

Whoa! Don't touch this truck. Looks all OEM to me. Except for some in cabin electrictronics. Very nice. This looks restored already. Show us the ugly side that has you thinking about a restore.

Original color on those wheels would have been chrome I think.

It hasn't been restored its just in really good condition (68K miles).

I want to paint the wheels the original color (they were not originally chrome, maybe the current dark gray is original?), add the aluminum hub covers (rear) & sleeves (front), new lug nuts, etc ...

The front bumper needs to be straightened and re-chromed and the rear needs to be re-chromed. Replace the black bumper ends (old / cracked). Restore the grill and headlight buckets to new looking and I am wondering about the poles on the bumper (original or added?).

Remove tint. Remove non-stock stuff (24 volt converter, cheap security system (under the hood) and change all fluids (oil, transmission and gear oil).

From there just keep her in the garage and drive on a sunny day. One of my biggest issues is I may have to buy another one as a daily driver!

Great looking 60! I also have an 24v '85 HJ60, but mine is LHD with 500,000 km's. Get some more pictures of the interior, second row and cargo area if you get a chance. Congratulations on you new beauty and welcome to the forum!

Sweet... you're gonna have to give us some more details about how and where you came across this time capsule. We don't see many this fresh.

Are you wanting to do a complete restore, or just bring everything up to OEM and freshen up the irregularities (like the bumper)?

If you're thinking about a completed frame off/nut & bolt restore, are you going to do it yourself, or send it off?

If you're looking for hard to find OEM stuff, @beno should be your go to guy. You need to have a $100 minimum order, but that should be no problem for this truck. Also, Beno (Onur) can tell you what parts are no longer available. And what this truck was originally equipped with. He's like the Rainman of Toyota parts. He can rattle off 10 digit 30-year old part numbers from memory.

You need to contact him by phone or email. He will not reply to PM's here (I don't think). His contact info should be here someplace.

Parking poles are not original, but cool. Japan loves them.

Truck looks pristine!

Does anyone have a p/n for the flare holder on passenger kick panel? I can't locate it on any diagram.

So ... not sure how much people normally write but I can be long winded ;-)

As stated I am an old Mopar guy with a mechanical background (although its not what I do for a living). My girlfriend and I love watching the restoration / customizing shows on Velocity. I am forever telling her "I can do that" or "I have done that". We decided to look for a project that we could restore together. I created searches on eBay for cars that we love ... one search was for old Mopars and another for Land Cruisers. We were looking for cars we love while also hoping to find an investment (very hard to do with Mopars considering the prices / popularity).

This truck popped up one day in Chicago and I called the guy to get the lowdown ... he stated it was originally imported into Canada by a Japanese diplomat that imported his personal vehicle, he sold it to "Joe" who we believe was the second owner. We found receipts (including complete aftermarket undercoating (NO RUST) that match the story and tells the tale of the mileage (Kilometers). We bought the truck for $16K, flew to Chicago and drove her home (Suwanee, GA). The ride home was EPIC albeit the 2H got a little hot crossing the mountains (did not let her overheat). The steering also has some play although I am not sure how much is normal. The play appears to come exclusively from the steering box although the steering box has a ton of adjustment.

Had she not been what she is I would have immediately took her to the North Georgia Mountains and attempted to climb stuff (anything), but because she is so stock (low mileage) I don't want to risk damaging her to get some kicks ... we are now thinking we should restore her (replace anything needing replacing OEM), re-chrome, paint and not put a lot of miles on her. I think a frame off restoration might be more detrimental than just making everything look new as she is in really, really good original condition.

This is our first Land Cruiser although we are totally Toyota people (next to my heartfelt Mopars). We are now looking for another 60 series that we can do whatever we want to (head for the hills) without risking something truly original.

I created an album with more pics ... I will take some more and add them (cargo area, rear, winch close up, etc ...).

Thanks for the interest and letting me talk (write) as I really like telling the story!

You stole that Cruiser man. Great find. I've seen three of those bumper/winch combos sell on eBay for around $4000 by themselves!

I wouldn't call this a project though haha. Just remove anything non stock and try to source the OEM replacement. I bet you could flip it as is right now and make several thousand dollars.

Now park that Cruiser in your garage and start looking for a real project like this one...

84 FJ60 Resto,

Read this thread. To the end for inspiration
