I have gotten the new firewall and floor welded in and am getting the frame ready for sand blast. I am making progress, slow and steady wins the race, so get off my back, Lumpy.

Found the pics of the new firewall and floor. After a lot of fitting trial and error, I was able to weld it in place. A nice improvement over the old floor, this one has only minor surface rust. Now the body work begins!!

One more of the firewall and dash. A pic of my new tilt steering column out of an 89 Trans Am. Got it from pick a part over the labor day 1/2 off weekend, paid $15.00 for it!!! Grabbed a Taurus fan while I was there, too.

I have been taking baby steps on this project lately, but it has been progress (so get off my A$$ Terry:p). Today, I fabbed up my new mount to install my new tilt column and bolted on the new 13" steering wheel. The Art Carr shifter with one of their new modified shift gates showed up on the door step while I was at work. Now to figure out where it is going to be mounted. I will need to allow room for the twin stick for the t-case.

Today I put the body back down on the frame. In order to do that, I had to clearance the floor. Since this is my new floor, I made a tester cut around my e-brake disc and trimmed as little as possible. I then had to stretch my new trans cover 3". I had an old cowl in the garage, so I cut out a 3"x15" strip to use as my filler. After getting the bends pretty close I tacked it together, flapper disc the welds down and added a little primer. I still need to finish the edges and drill some mounting holes to keep it to the floor.

Malphrus,

This is the first time I have gotten to use them. They worked really well. I bought these at Harbor Freight and believe it or not, they did not break or fall apart after the first use!! They hold the metal nice and flat and makes welding much easier. I forget the name of them, "Sheet Metal Welding Clamps?"

So what color are you going to paint it?

I'm glad I could help out with the wife buying you a 40x60 shop.

Dan,

I am leaning towards Mopar Sassy Grass Green. I have to keep with the whole Snotz theme. As far as a new shop, I can only dream of having such a place, so for now my 2 car garage will have to do :)

Right now I am in a bit of a holding pattern, I ordered a twin-stick and a new cross member for my t-case, but it has not showed up yet. Once I get the cross member fabbed in and everything looks good, the frame is going in for sand blast and then the real fun of final assembly begins.

Thanks again for bringing down the tube fenders for me, they will give me something to do.

I found some time today to get into this project again. I finished the steering column mount, installed a twin stick in the t-case, cut out the trans cover for twin stick and mocked up my auto shifter. I could have been done in a few hours, but dropping a roll pin down inside the t-case took most of the day.

Last for the day. This is close to where I want the shifter positioned, possibly a little higher. The seat height and shifter location will probably change when I build my cage.

After seeing your post I bought these same clamps at Harbor Freight for $5.00.

I tacked welded around them as you have, which brings me to my possibly obvious question.

After removing the clamps do I continue to make tack welds across the gap or try and lay a bead along gap?

I'm a beginning welder and learning from scratch.

I continued with tack welds to keep the heat build up to a minimum. Do some practicing on scrap sheet metal and find what works best for you.

I was originally going to paint it Torch Red, but I have grown to like this nasty green color. The frame will be going to get sand blasted very soon!
