once again, thoroughly confused...

I had pretty much concluded that Js were too much for my needs and required too many other mods. So far, so good. So was thinking 863 or 864.

I had developed the impression that the 864s were really very heavy duty springs that one should only contemplate with a rig that is seriously loaded, e.g. with extra tanks, heavy rear bumpers, drawers etc... In particular, the posts by Dan about how he could not put the shocks back on and his ammo experiment were pretty convincing.

Since I don't have the constant heavy loads and often wheel locally with minimal weight, I was therefore thinking 863s, possibly with airbags added for heavy expeditions and towing.

But then again, now I read that some other knowledgeable folks think that the 864s are just as ride-friendly with unloaded rigs as the 863s, and resist sagging much better than the latter.

So, now am confused again...

Other feedback, advice, or comments?

850 J's with 863's rear seem to be popular.

I for one believe 864s are better. I ran 863 for a long time and moved to 864s because I prefer them even for on road. I'm genuinely curious of those who are anti-864s who have actually run them and gone back to 863s? Most of us running 864s love them.

I do have a rear tire carrier, but that's it. When we'd go on road trips, a few suitcases and the dog in back would make the 863s saggin-waggon. I've noted almost no highway difference with 864s and the 80 is now the wife's DD and she even likes them better.

To each their own; as such I prefer the 864s

I pulled my 864's off and installed 863's (863's on front). I've loaded it down full of camping gear, and have yet to make it sag. I wasn't really dissatisfied with the 864's, but I decided to wait til I got the spare tank, tire carrier, etc. so it didn't sit up quite so high. They did feel a little stiff w/o any load, but that could have been my imagination.

Will the 863's with the 850J's make a otherwise stock 80 sit level?

from what I recall reading, that seemed to be the general consensus...
although that would depend on armor etc

the 864s gives about an inch more lift than the 863s with both unloaded, correct?
and the 864s unloaded give the same lift as the Js unloaded, right?

IIRC the Js are an inch higher than the 864's and the 864s are an inch higher than the 863s. (If everything else was stock. i.e. unloaded)

An un-loaded 864 lifts about the same ammount as an unloaded 863J (both of which are about an inch or so heigher than an 863). It takes twice the weight to lower 864's to any given height as it takes to lower 863J or 863.

I would not run 864's unless you pack a lot of extra weight all the time.
