OME 863s or 864s?

Oh for the love of Mike and all that's holy, pick a set of springs/shocks/tires already Eric :frown:

Gee Eric.... I'm pretty happy with my 851/860 med load 2.5" lift setup. I know that's not what you asked but it works for me with no heavy armor.

Also consider that the springs on their own aren't very expensive (shocks are though). Just buy something and if you need to change in a couple of years, what's the big deal compared to the price of fuel?

It's like 2 tank fulls == a pair of springs.

Slight hijack:

why doesn't OME make progressive rate springs for the rear of our 80s? They make them for the LRs and the ride is very nice when empty vs ours.

I would go with j's up front and 863's rear. Bailey has this setup and I think it looks and works great. Of course you will need to get the one inch spacers as well. But defintly a good three inch lift setup in my opinion. I wish I went that route.

Ok, I'll beat this dead horse some more....

I have 850Js and 863s with no spacers. this ride is much better than the 850/860 combo I had previously. Even though this is a heavy/heavy setup, the suspension "seems" to be more supple. However, I still feel this suspension to be quite stiff as compared to other vehicles with a set of progressive springs in the rear. Also, with this setup, the rake is one inch between front and rear. This is great for loading up the rear with camping gear and not have to worry about your ass dragging or blinding oncoming traffic with your lights.

Unless Eric has a crap load of crap in the rear cargo area, 864s will produce a bone jarring ride while empty.

well, seems like except for 3FJ and reffug, the consensus appears to be that 863s may be better for a non-permanently loaded truck...

problem is that I do a lot of local wheeling where I'm lightly loaded and then the occasional big trip with everything including the kitchen sink in the rig and trailer, kinda like the 2 extremes. So maybe 863s with airbags is the way to go then for more flexibility ( ;) )!

unhappily, you guys really pushing for Js in the front, eh? I didn't want to have to deal with the associated mods! sheesh....! :D

Too many mods involved with the J's for me, of course I don't put in the trail time that many do... I just go camping and jump curbs occasionally. I didn't see the value of extending lines and linkages just to level it out a bit and gain an inch or so clearance. I don't mind a little rake. I'll try to post pic's of the 863/864 and 863x2 later. Stupid J's.

Actually, I like a little bit of the ass-high look. 864s really are not that high in my estimation. I feel 850 w/ the 864s bring the truck to only a slight rear-end-high. It is not that drastic.

Stupid J's.
Read CruiserDan's post again. The lift is the same. 863J's are the same height as 864's, the difference is the 864's require more weight to squish.. some would call that a stiffer ride.

Not a problem, just buy two sets of springs and swap them when you need them. Otherwise we also have to discuss the negatives of airbags on artriculation and possible pinching etc. :D What happens when it fails on a long trip. I can come up with a ton more topics for threads :D

Advise to all people that come to our shop. Forget about inches of lift , what tire size do you want to run, then how do you use the truck, after this we recommend the suspension. If the $'s does not match the budget, then you have to start compromising, or change tire size or use. Only you can make that decision.

The Js in practice (unloaded) just have to be taller! My brother's 80 is J'd and I'm 864'd, he sits quite a bit higher than I do.

That's what i like to hear, real world experience and comparisson.

thanks, Christo, but I think I'll have to pass on the idea of swapping springs just for a trip every so often... I'm sure I'd end up being fast at it eventually, but I do have a few other things to do besides this (like spend time on MUD?)! :)

Negatives of airbags? Yikes! another can of worms eh? :D

good point, a lot of the "info" here (esp. mine) seems often to be from hearsay rather than personal experience. Probably not that many folks here who have ran both 63s and 64s! :)

Eric, for the type of driving you have always described wanting/needing/desiring to do here, IMHO airbags would be a good way for you to go. Doubtful you'd ever be in a situation where articulation that Christo routinely is in would come about. hehehe

I love my airbags for heavy loads and towing.

Sorry for the delay... not sure if this helps at all, but here's my truck stock, with 850/864, and with 850/863, respectively. I think adding the ARB replicates the rake of the 863/864 combo.

Corrected... thanks e

you put 63s in front? never heard of that done before..,

Doh! No, I meant 850's in front. I edited the pic post. Thanks for catching that. I guess I was thinking "heavy" all the way around.
